    Default 1939 Craftsman Wood Lathe

    Hello Guys,

Have a couple of questions I'm sure the experts can answer. I have an old Craftsman wood lathe that has the oil bath type bearings. I'm not even sure their are bearings. It has the little oil filler caps on the front and back of the headstock. My question is how often should I oil these? Everytime I use it. If using it for more than 30 minutes straight should I oil it again. The headstock is still real tight and I want to keep that way was just wanting to know how often to oil. It also has what I believe is a face bearing behind the pulley on the back of the headstock. If I wanted to convert this setup to new sealed ball bearings is that something I could do? If so where would one get bearings?

Here is a photo of the headstock.

    Thanks for the help,

You should be able to track down one of the original manuals for this which should tell you how often in the maintenance section.

I'm sure you would get a few replies if no-one else does here
I think it would also come down to how often you use it and how hard as well - a bit like how often do you service your car if you're only doing 20 miles a week as opposed to a taxi driver who does a few thousand.

    Thanks Stewie,

Found a manual for it right off the batt. It says lubricate frequently. I also found what they call the cover that goes over the headstock. Thanks so much for your help.
