    Default 20 inch Disc Sander

Greetings Chaps. This has been a work in progress for some time now. It is almost impossible to procure a reasonable size Disc Sander. So a couple of years ago I started to build one with the view to making Foundry patterns. It is now approaching completion. The pics were taken today and it is not complete. The Disc is 3/4 " plywood this is directly coupled to a 240 volt motor as per the pics. Because the disc has a velcro backing the table has to be able to be moved back so it is easier to fit the sanding discs in place. This is done by loosening the two vertical pieces and moving the table back. When the table is pushed back it should return to being square with the disc. As I use tapered blocks to get draft on the patterns there is no need for the table to be tilted. I have yet to place a guard over the edge of the disc. This also assists wit the dust suction. There is also a wooden box under the table to help with the dust collection. These beasties make lotts of dust. Hope this is of interest yours 4-6-4

That's a pretty good looking sander there 4-6-4.
If you could find yourself an old cast iron table with a keyway for the bench it would be even better.
They do come up for sale on ebay every now and again off old machines that are rusted/busted and are sold off for parts.
The only other suggestion I would make is to look at re-jigging the tilt mechanism so that when you tilt the table you don't have so much of a gap between the sander wheel and the table.
How many HP is the motor to effectively turn the sander under load without it slowing down appreciably ?

The machine looks good, with 1 exception, uyou really need a safety guard, over the top of the disc.

This could also assist as a mounting for the dust extraction pipe.
