2nd Hand Bench Grinder - Questions
I recently acquired a 2nd-hand 2850rpm Abbott & Ashby bench grinder in good condition.
I would I'd like to replace the existing grinding wheels with CBN ones and noticed that Vicmarc CBN's are wide with a side grinding face and solid compared with other ones with a narrower grinding face. Price-wise they all seem to be in the same ballpark. Is the Vicmarc a better bang-for-your-buck wheel or is it used for more specific purposes? The other question is: what grits should I select?
Also, the tool rests seem a bit light on. Should I replace them and, if so, any suggestions?
All advice/recommendations gratefully received!
Cheers Yvan

CBN wheel grit depends on what you want to grind.
If HSS lathe chisels (noting that HSS does not mind the heat from the speed of this grinder), then I’d get a 180 for general grinding and a 600 to finish.
If O1, A2 and the like bench chisels and plane blades, I might stick to 80 grit, perhaps (and no finer than) 180 grit.
Tool rests are a joke on all grinders. There are a few choices. I have the Tormek ....
