Default 3/4" x 3/8" hardwood runners for table slots

I have always found it hard to find good runners for the standard 3/4" wide lots on tablesaws, bandsaws and even disk sander. Very fiddly to make.

The other day in Bunnings Townsville I walked past one section next to where they keep a selection of different size timber in pigeon hole shelving, and a piece of 900 x 64 x19mm kwila caught my eye (Item#: 0095471) . Whipped out the vernier calipers on the spot to find they were 19.0mm, a perfect fit.

Was able to rip 9mm thick runners the full length of the 900 long board. The edges were all rounded, so that meant the runner could drop nicely into the 3/4" slot.
After each edge was ripped, I rounded over edges of the remaining board and then cut another lot 9mm thick, and so on.... Got quite a few runners out of a $5 board

And it is hardwood, so should last a bit.

Pleased to share this information for others to benefit. but you need to check the width of each piece to be sure it is 19mm wide

( only available in Queensland, we have discovered)
    regards,

    Dengy

No luck, no such item on their site.
Have you got any more info, please.

It would seem that it may be a regional timber.

The Brisbane stores have 64x19 hardwood flooring
The Canberra stores just have DAR pine in 19mm

Didn't change my stores any further

    Cheers

    Crowie, Merbau is Kwila.

verawood, look up the item description: 67mm x 19mm x 900mm Plain Hardwood Baluster. Comes under their Internal Handrail category

Yep, aussiePhil. Available in the QLD stores only by the look of it. I looked at 3 Brisbane and Ipswich stores, and they all had it in stock, as well as the main regional centres. Could not find it in NSW stores

Thanks to crowie, it would pay all you Mexicans to chase up 90 x 19mm KD Select Grade Merbau Decking - Linear Metre (I/N: 006273) in your local store. Same stuff, only much wider !!
    regards,

If you go to your local Special Orders desk, I am sure they can get it in from a QLD store at no extra cost

thanks to crowie, I had a look at our local store and found 90 x 19mm KD Select Grade Merbau Decking - Linear Metre (I/N: 006273)

Same as I found, but wider, so more runners per metre. But be sure to check the thickness with vernier calipers before buying

I really wish i could convince my work place to setup the dam surface grinder.

Would gladly churn out a heap of precision ground steel runners.

Old trick when cabinet making was to use a candle on the runners and they worked fine for as long as required.
