advices on choosing bandsaw and sharpening systems
hi all,
I am in the process of purchasing some news toys (tools ) and I would need some advices.
I am looking at buying a bandsaw and a sharpening system.
for the bandsaws, I have a choice between:
- carbatec (Carba-Tec 17" CE Bandsaw : CARBA-TEC)
- Hare/forbe (W4334 | BP-470 Wood Band Saw | machineryhouse.com.au)
They look similar to me however in terms of price one is almost $200 cheaper. I have heard of Hare forbe but never bought from them. I also do not know their own brand and if it is as reliable as the carbatec one.
any suggestion/advices regarding those 2 models?
I am also considering the carbatec heavy duty 14" bandsaw which is much cheaper but I am leaning towards one of the 2 above.
Any suggestion regarding this 14" bandsaw.
I don't mind spending the extra has long as it is worth it.
for the sharpening system, same thing between Hare/forbe and carbatec:
- Carbatec: tormek T3
- Hare/Forbe: Sheppach Tiger 2000 package (K120 | TiGer 2000 Wet Stone Grinder Package with + Wood Turners + House Hold Kits | machineryhouse.com.au) or the Tiger 2500
I am leaning towards the Tormek from the review I read but it is almost double the price and it does not come with all the jigs that come with the sheppach tiger 2000 kit.
although I don't mind spending the extra on the bandsaw, for the sharpening system, I am not sure if it is worth it since I will use it not as often as the bandsaw and mainly for chisels, handplanes blades and kitchen knives (probably the main use).
any suggestion? I am open to other products whether it is the bandsaws or sharpening systems.
Thanks

I doubt there would be much difference in the quality of the bandsaws. The carbatech one comes with a 5 year warranty compared the HnF's 2 years.
I'd put my money down for the carbatech one even though its only a 17" one. HnF's is 18".

Ive got the Sheppach Tiger 2000 & its good, but I found I had to dress the wheel before I used it & the Tormek diamond dresser fits straight on & is excellent.
I have a Leda 17" BS & I prefer all Leda machines to H&F or Carbatec
I was faced with the same decision RE 14 or 17" & when it came down to it, You can still do little jobs on a bigger BS
SteveThe fact remains, that 97% of all statistics are made up, yet 87% of the population think they are real.

As a band-saw is my next purchase, and having looked at most of the 17"/18" saws that are around, I have decided to go for a Hammer N4400
A little bit more than the others but the quality speaks for itself.
Sharpening...well go for the Tormek. I use mine a lot and I have the old Tormek 2000.
I wouldn't be without it.
...and combine the Tormek with this and all your sharpening needs are complete.
...just my $0.02.
cheers
