Default Small air compressor - tell me about this ...

I have just inherited a small air compressor from a close friend, who passed away a few years ago. I recognise that it is likely to be very limited in its range, however my dear friend was a wonderful carpenter and built or restored a number of homes. It must have been useful. I would like to know in what ways. Hell, I do not even know where to stick the hose, and what part is missing (his wife said "an attachment is missing"). Two hoses included.

The compressor is 2.5 hp and has a 40 lt tank.

    Pictures attached.

    Many thanks.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek

Looks like my generic red one. I use mine with nail guns, spray painting, moving sawdust piles. Seems like you are missing a pressure regulator. eBay $16-$20. The red knob on top of the pressure switch lifts up/pushes down for on/off. If you plug it in and still no go see your image where press for reset push the overload button. Mine is about 10 years old and hasn’t missed a beat. Countless hours of work.

From the images, as Acco has said, the air intake filter is missing.
The red hose has screw fittings at both ends, the yellow hose has female fittings at both ends. Normally the air hose has a male fitting at one end (that connects to the air compressor) and the other end has a female fitting that is self sealing. There should be, but your images do not show, a similar female fitting on the air compressor.

If possible take a picture through the handle showing the side of the pressure gauge and pressure switch (the thing with the red button on top) and that will help with what is missing.

Also there should be a little window on the end of the compressor showing an oil level. Check that the compressor has oil.

On the bottom of the tank there should be a drain or plug. Check that it is there and the condition.

    Hope all this helps.

I have a similar size compressor. Used for checking and inflating car and bike tyres, nail guns and running a die grinder.

Its usually a black plastic housing about 3” in diameter and about an 1” or 1 1/2” thick.

Pic showing a compressor with one attached.

Link to to one on eBay, you’ll need to match one to the size of your inlet which is most likely 1/2” or 15mm thread.

Derek, this model you have also looks exactly like the Lincoln units sold by Sydney Tools: https://sydneytools.com.au/product/l...air-compressor

If you can't find something easy and local, please drop me a PM, and I will give Sydney Tools a buzz for you and see if they sell spare parts for them etc.

Also happy to pick up parts and send them over for you if that will help.

Super Works was a house brand of SuperCheapAuto before they changed to Black Ridge.

Agree with other posts, the intake filter, and output regulator are missing.... as are your yet to be purchased array of air tools, and the pipes, hoses, connectors, clamps, tape etc. to get it all going

On Derek's I can't see any pipe bringing the CA from the pump to the regulator. In DJ's pic of the Scorpion you can see the white pipe which does this.

I strongly suspect that it will be tooth-rattling loud, but they are a useful tool. The main thing I use mine for is blowing out dust from the grain, but also for blowing fibres out of the 100mm rollers before use, and drying said rollers after use (a super rapid spin and the roller sheds the solvent). Also very effective for cleaning filters such as in your CT Vac.

If you build a cabinet for it, like this, then you may save your teeth (and your undies - sometime we use it and forget to turn it off, slow leak, motor cuts in when least expected.....)

Here are a couple more images. I really am not sure what I should be looking for. Does anyone have a manual and directions? (yes, I know that sounds amateurish for some of you).

Found your major problem; the pressure regulator has been snapped off.

    Busted.jpg

Unfortunately it looks like it had a cast male threaded piece; if so you'll have to replace the entire assembly with one of these or similar:
    switch assembly.jpg

If however it was a nipple that had sheared off you can extract the broken section with an easy-out (thread extractor):
    Screw extractors.PNG
Then you buy these and fit them all together with PTFE thread tape. These are a nipple, a pressure regulator and an isolation valve plus a "Nitto" style coupling to hook up your hoses.
    nipple.jpg regulator.PNG M-F valve.PNG Nitto coupling.jpg
(the valve is shown back to front)

Oh; and here is your air filter:
    Filter.PNG

If you need to replace the entire switch assembly then you'll have to purchase a new switch and have it wired up; Bobl would be a handy resource to draw upon for advice. The one I showed is a full assembly but you can also get just the switch and add the rest of the bits I showed.
If the gods are smiling on you and it is in fact just a sheared nipple in the switch; then all the individual bits are available on the shelf from Trade Tools or any retail shop that specialises in air compressors and accessories; and of course Flea-bay and the like where I got all the pictures from. They are all 1/4" BSPT fittings.

This Spear & Jackson model is for all intents and purposes exactly the same as yours; here is the manual:

Well spotted Chief. That only leaves the slightly more major problem of how the air gets to the regulator, and I still can't see it. It may be a little more tricky to fix, so that becomes the critical path.

In this image you can see a yellowish assembly below left of the gauge. From the back of that is a copper pipe going back to the pump. This carries the air to the regulator through the smaller pipe directly below the gauge.
    Capture.JPG

On Derek's I can't even see where it was mounted on the tank!
