Blade Setting on 15 inch Thicknesser
My JPW 15 is missing it's blade setting jig, it is the type that is like two C's joined by a bar that you sit over the cutter head to determine blade height out of the cutter head and keep the blade parallel to the bed. I went to the Jet shop today and they have none in stock and could not tell me how much they would be so are getting back to me. A little looking has however found that Timbecon have the Torquata deluxe blade jig on special. Now I looked at these at the Jet shop but figured they were to much fiddling around and at $110 I did not think really worth it. I expect they are going to want about $40 for the standard Jet jig so figure may the deluxe jig is a better option.
Who has one and what do they think of them, more fiddling than they are worth or good value? How do you know what height to set them at the first time you use them? I guess I could use them for my jointer as well instead of magnets?
Cheers,
Burnsy

I've got the Carbetec version of these and I use them to set my knives as they also hold the knife at the right height due to the magnet. They work really well but if you're intending to use them on different machines, you'll need to make yourself a story block for each machine as the gauge on them won't be reliable enough unless you're happy to put up with a half mill difference.

This is what I was worried about, inaccurate Chinese measuring gear that is often the cause of more frustration than they are worth, maybe I should just get the standard fixed jig from Jet. Anyone got one they don't want anymore because they like their Deluxe Jig better?

I would definitely stick with the one that comes with the machine. It is so simple and it works so well.
Nice machine BTW.

Thanks Wongo, you were about to get a PM to ask your advice, you have confirmed what I thought, now to just see how much they want to sting me for the original jig

Have you tried Gary Pye?
He is usually quite good and is a sponsor here, he may have one or two kicking around

Yep, have dropped him and email and as I have to wait for one to come from the east if I get it here I would rather get one from him if the price is right, especially seeing the local mob would not sell me the one that was sitting on the floor machine and order a new one for that and that despite there being another one sitting on the woodfast machine next to it. Also, even though it was only 12.30pm they could not manage to get a price for me today let alone one while I was sitting in the shop. Not to mention the bloke did not even know what I was talking about when I mentioned it was the cutter head that has a jib to hold the blade in place.

Bought the machine second hand from another forum member last year and he could only find a spare set of blades, nothing else. I called him tonight to see if it had turned up since then but his phone is off.
And yeah yeah I know I should have changed the blades since then but I have not had time so have been putting up with dull blades for a while

Well Gary has not got one and the local mob - well they are still working out how to use the phone I think - not happy Looks like I might have to go the delux Chinese jig road and make some story blocks if a call to the "local mob" gets me no joy tomorrow.

Have got a spare one here which I got from our local tip shop, only picked it up cause I thought some one may eventually need one, is the same size as the one on my Talon 330 thicknesser. Don't know if it suits yours but is yours to have if you want it. PM me if you do and we'll work out postage arrangement

Here is an update for others future reference. I ended up buying the standard jig from carbatec for their deluxe 15 inch thicknesser and it fits the Jet cutter block. There was much head scratching as after using it to set the knives the machine would not cut. It seems that the previous owner had used a different jig/method that allowed the blades to protrude out further. Because of this they had set the infeed and outfeed roller lower so when I set the blades to the original specs using the standard jig they did not contact the wood.
15 minutes to make a measuring block as outlined in the manual and another 30 minutes using it to recalibrate the machine by raising the infeed and outfeed rollers has it working like a dream. In fact I think that despite the lower roller settings the previous owner has used, they had also set the knives protruding to far still as it was previously cutting very aggressively. It was also nice to know that everything was and is parallel and equal that needs to be, something I had wondered about but taken no time to test because it was cutting fine. Might take two passes to take off the same amount of material but the finish is like a mirror.
Thanks to Wongo for listening to my ravings and helping out via PM when it did not cut at first.
