Bobbin Sander - Carbatec vs Sheppach
I was about to e-bay bid on a Carbatec unit but I've noticed that Hare & Forbes have a new Sheppach at less than starting bid for the used Carbatec.
Forum search seems to indicate that people are happy with the Sheppach which seems to have similiar specs.
Any advice appreciated.Graeme

I have the Scheppach one, bought during the annual H&F sale. Its functional, a bit on the noisy side, but it does the job. I don't use it enough to justify spending more on Carbatec, JET, etc.
No tilting table, but that wasn't an issue for me. Be aware also that H&F only keep the replacement sleeves in a very limited range of grits.
There's a video review of the Scheppach/Triton sander somewhere on Stu's Shed I think.

The H&F unit looks very similar to the old Triton model so perhaps a search on that may provide additional feedback. I would have thought that the Carb-Tec unit would be better quality than the H&F but perhaps not the Ebay one!
The Carba-Tec one on Ebay looks to be an older model to what they are currently selling for $439. The first bid on Ebay will be $295 and may go higher.
My guess is that it would be a good chance you could talk Carba-Tec down to the $400 mark for a new machine, with warranty and new sanding sleeves (which range from $4.50-$10.00 each). As a guide I would have thought that the second hand machine should be around 50% (perhaps higher depending on use and quality however it is always an unknown with an Ebay auction so I would tend to be on the lower side for unseen goods due to the extra risk).
People seem to go a little crazy on Ebay at times, especially with used machinery. At the moment there is an old rusty 2HP dust extractor, without bags, without stand, without hoses etc currently at $200 with 8 Bids. Of course it depends on what you plan to do with it but you can get a new unit for $359 including bags, stand and warranty. You will be well over this if you tried to replace all the parts required on the Ebay one, which still has a few days of bidding to go!

Depends. What are your intentions? I bought the older generation benchtop bobbin sander from Carbatec and it was quite well made. I sold when I was unwell a while back as I needed the cash but in truth I found it to be unsuitable for my needs. I really should have bought the floor standing model. I'm doing large radius curves on beds and the like. The biggest bobbin is only two inches which is really not big enough for what I needed it for.

My main use would be for bandsaw boxes. I finished one the other day and can not believe how much sanding is required to make it look professional. I also thought it would be wothwhile for cleaning up bandsaw curves on general furniture.
I have been distracted by helping friends with flood preparations and subsequently missed the e-bay auction. Gives me more time to inspect the machines and consider the alternatives.
Thanks all for your help.
