Thread: CarbaTec Drill Press upgrade chuck

I have a Crapatec bench drill press, and the chuck supplied with it went into the bin on Day 1.

Replaced with a keyless from McJings, something like one of these (design seems to have changed a bit)

I replaced my drill press chuck with a Rohm and found it a significant improvement.

Thanks guys, I just knew someone would understand my dilemma and had a solution. I only use a drill press occasionally but now at least I can start to set it up right, as if you really can set up a carbacrap drill press any better anyhow.

Ok guys, McJing after two weeks of trying can’t come up with the goods due to supply problems. The Amazon link gives a chuck that costs $172 and is not what I want to pay by a long mile, so I’m asking if anyone has another possible supplier to solve my problem. Remember it has to handle a 3mm drill bit at least and fit a MT2 arbor.

Its a precision item with 0.08 mm runout which is pretty good for a DP chuck.

It normally comes air freight and takes about two weeks to get stuff from them but it could take longer these days.

I have bought a lot of stuff from them (reamers, large drill bits, collet chucks and collets, taps and dies) - they have been very reliable and the quality is typically similar or better than McJings.

BTW to stop you bits wandering inwards on a keyed chuck, try lubricating the chuck with some White Li grease spray, and then tightening using all 3 holes in the chuck

I have the keyless chuck from Timbecon (Baladonia I believe) and have found it to be faultless. I will add that I do very little drilling into stainless.

Just an update on the drill chuck. McJing gave me a refund on the arbor required for the B12 drill chuck I ordered based on their suggestion of the appropriate arbor but did not come to the party on a drill chuck that I can’t use because they could not supply the arbor for it. I managed to find the right arbor for the B12 drill chuck after much searching on the net and it’s on its way from Hong Kong and at a slightly cheaper price overall ie. including postage than the one that McJing could not supply. Overall I’m happy to get things sorted but I will always check if McJing have stock before I use them again. I’m sure McJing are not the only one’s with supply problems due to Covid-19. Now if only I could make up the time I’ve lost over this whole episode. I know I’ll invent a time machine.

Or in the interim you can go to a dumpshop, buy a cordless with a serviceable chuck, pull it apart, they usually have a 12mm shaft and put it in your crappy chuck. I have been doing it for years for sub 3mm drill bits.
