Carbetec WDS-400 electric drum motor repair or replacement
I have an old wds-400 that belonged to my FIL. He really gave it a workout. Now when I use it the drum motor cuts out with the thermal overload switch.
Decison is to replace it or repair.
Anyone had similar problem?
What did you do.
I am in Newcastle area and if anyone knows of a good electric motor repairer let me know.
I'll also contact Carbatec on Mon to see what they suggest.

Don't replace it just yet Lyle.
If you have an air compressor give it a good blow out and check the drive mechanism.
Might just need a sevice. Those were the droids I was looking for.

Hi Lyle. There is a centrifugal switch in the motor. I had problems with my WDS400 and it was that switch that was the cause of the problem, though it might appear to be a thermal overload problem. Carbatec Perth fixed mine for not a lot of money. Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies.
Took the fan cover off and had a look. Remarkably clean of dirt, dust etc, watched the centripital switch during start and it appears to function correctly. Drum spins easily with power off and takes a good time to run down when switched off, so I reckon the bearings are OK.
Didn't take the cover off the thermal switch as I don't think there would be any point.
FIL used this as a thicknesser for cranky timber, so I'm suspecting the windings.
The machine runs OK for a short while during use then shuts off with thermal overload.
So after the bit of checking I have done I suspect either a faulty thermal switch or windings are breaking down electrically.
The machine is date stamped 9/2000 make so it has taken a bit of use/abuse.
I'll call Carbatec today and see what they suggest.

Called Carbatec and had a talk to one of their support people.
Not very productive except to say "you need a new motor, cost is $468 plus delivery. More than half the new cost
So now I'm looking for a replacement motor or better a good rewind shop in Newcastle.
Anyone got a name of a company?
