Thread: cheap digital inclinometer

I have a square one, can't think of the brand as I am at work. Has a couple of magnets in the bottom. I find it to be fantastic. Worth every cent for setting up machinery and getting accurate angles on saw blades etc. You won't regret it.

I bought a square one too. Great bit of kit. About $39 on eBay. Only regret is that it didn't come with a backlight - essential as far as I'm concerned or maybe it's the lighting in my shed

I have 5 of these devices. I got my first one back in 2007 and now have 2 Wixeys, A Tiltbox and cheap Chinese one that east batteries, and the Tiltmeter iPhone App.

The Wixeys I use setting up to chainsaw mill logs, setting up the bandsaw mill, and sharpening chainsaws chains - I keep one at home and one it the car so I always have one on hand.
The magnets are brilliant and allow me to stick them in awkward spots.
They get pretty dusty and greasy and fall of machines etc which is something I'd rather not expose my mobile to.

The Tiltbox is my goto device for woodwork around the shed. I tend to keep this clean

The iPhone app is good for somethings but not others.
I like the way it gives X-Y tilt simultaneously making it useful to level the caravan. My IPhone has a rubber case so it does not give a steady read out on anything with even the slight vibration and even with the protective rubber case off the fact that it has a curved back means it's not much better. It seems to jump around in the last decimal place by +/- 0.2º whereas the Wixey's and tilt box will sit steady at the nearest 0.05º - I have no idea how right this is although all my reverse checks one way and then the other always combine to the correct angles - of course both angles could be wrong.

The latest Wixie is backlit (or should that be backlighted? ). I have one. It is also better with batteries.

Sorry, I don't recall where I purchased mine. I bought it at the same time as the Wixie for the tablesaw fence. I think that this was cheaper to get from the USA.

amazingly there is an inclinometer for windows phone which I downloaded - i immediately noted one problem however. it works well showing any deviation from level for 360deg and flips to a level when i turn the phone on edge showing degrees. very neat -

The fact remains that few of my benches or machines are any where near dead level and it would be helpful to be able to reset it so that it reads level on any given surface.
do any of the units above mentioned have that feature?

Yep, pretty sure they all do.

One of the issues with digital levels is that they are insensitive to small changes in angle. Several months ago I went searching for an inexpensive (I was prepared to pay up to $150) digital level. I found a few, but discovered that one could raise up one end by 1/2" and not see any change in the angle number. A bubble was more responsive.

Thanks for that link - it could be my 6th one because having that edge might make it easier to use to set the angles on a chainsaw chain and for $10 its worth buying it just to try it out.
How is the battery use?
