Chinese compressors - who makes them all?
Been reading a bit. Curious to know more about the "Chicago Air" aluminium tank, quiet compressor sold by Sydney Tools. SYDNEY TOOLS - Chicago Air 50L 2x1.1HP Aluminium Compressor
So I eventually found Eluan ( Zhe Jiang Jonway Machinery & Electrical Manufacture Co.,Ltd.) which has the same model number though without wheels.
Zhe Jiang Jonway Machinery & Electrical Manufacture CO.,Ltd.--DIRECT DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSOR,OIL FREE AIR COMPRESSOR,BELT DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSOR,Vertical AIR COMPRESSOR,SCREW AIR COMPRESSOR,MOTOR,SPARE PART FOR AIR COMPRESSOR
It looks a lot like this company makes many if not most of the rebranded/OEM low end compressors out there in the marketplace. In amongst the various of the vast range of models are look alikes for most of the ones I have seen locally. Yes, the specifications look like nonsense comparing the CFM figures quoted by Sydney Tools with the ones on Eluan website.
The quiet ones appear mostly invented for dental surgeries. I guess they are probably a clone of some quality manufacturer but haven't managed to find out who that might be......
Found some interesting documents on energy efficiency and compressed air. For hobby use, the efficiency probably matters not. Google "efficient compressed air systems", esp the one at Energy Rating Website (Google is such a pain making it hard to capture the links for these documents.) - good general descriptions of the various compressor technologies as well.

thanks for sharing blouis79
$660AUD for a quiet compressor, you have no idea how lucky you are... I am in the market for a quiet compressor but the cheapest I can find is a $1800NZD ($1600AUD) Airmed by FIAC, it runs at 67dB
A similar Chicago Pneumatic is $2500NZD, which is about $2100AUD. Chicago Pneumatic 2HP Silent Air Compressor | Trade Me
Or you can spend $6500NZD ($5500AUD)on a 40L Jun air unit, JUN-AIR Compressors - Clean, Quiet and Dry Air Compressors - QUIET AIR
If you are buying Chinese product you have to be careful which one you buy, some of them are aimed for their internal market where a product is purchased, used for a few years and then sold as scrap metal.

Some tradetools "Renegade" compressors have pumps that look identical to this one from Eluan:
Zhe Jiang Jonway Machinery & Electrical Manufacture CO.,Ltd.--DIRECT DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSOR,OIL FREE AIR COMPRESSOR,BELT DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSOR,Vertical AIR COMPRESSOR,SCREW AIR COMPRESSOR,MOTOR,SPARE PART FOR AIR COMPRESSOR
Rather than uncertain Chinese, Kaeser looks the goods for a quality and high output German product. Looks like they cost about 3 times what the dearer chinese ones cost looking at european websites.
KAESER Australia
In amongst Kaeser customers is a who's who of european manufacturing KAESER Australia
Still haven't managed to find who makes the Stanley product again on special for $399 at Supercheap. (Some have suggested IR, but IR makes nothing like it that I can find.)

Eluan clones Dürr
It looks like the Eluan "silent" compressor models (as found on the Chicago Air rebadge sold by sydney tools SYDNEY TOOLS - Chicago Air 50L 2x1.1HP Aluminium Compressor) Zhe Jiang Jonway Machinery & Electrical Manufacture CO.,Ltd.--DIRECT DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSOR,OIL FREE AIR COMPRESSOR,BELT DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSOR,Vertical AIR COMPRESSOR,SCREW AIR COMPRESSOR,MOTOR,SPARE PART FOR AIR COMPRESSOR are a clone of a German dental compressor, Dürr or Durr or Duerr depending on how you like to anglicise german umlauts.
No doubt the chinese Dürr clone compressor would not be quite the same quality as the boxed silent compressors made by many at high cost (I think they are mostly scroll compressors). Albert, the "Chicago Air" brand of Sydney Tools is just a cheap play on and not to be confused with "Chicago Pneumatic".
An old Dürr bare compressor on ebay recently went for a measly $49 on relist:
OIL Free AIR Compressor Durr Technik Germany TYP A 035 62 2 Cylinder 12 BAR | eBay
New Dürr dental compressors are all V-twins. Older ones have the twin cylinder one at each end design apparently copied by Eluan.
Series comparison - Oilfree compressors by Dürr Technik
Compressed Air | DÜRR DENTAL AG
I presume there could be problems with a cheap oil-free piston design.

So, it looks like SIP (UK) has a compressor very similar to the the Stanley, but larger 3hp/100L but otherwise looks very similar.
SIP 05255 Airmate PB3800B/100S ProTech Oil Lubricated Air Compressor 230v | SIP UK
The SIP model is made in Italy by Nuair, part of Fini Nuair Italian compressor maker, who include Dari too. Fini NuAir - Home page They also have factories in China. The Stanley is Chinese made for Australia, so I presume it comes from a Fini Nuair factory OEM'd for Stanley. The Fini catalog Fini Compressors - Home page has the most information on the design of the compressors. (twin parallel piston models for these)
Somewhere overseas, Stanley appears to have a large range of compressors (not on any Stanley website I can find) STANLEY COMPRESSORS - PRO RANGE - ImustBE Shopping Informatique-Electronique
JW Ross, who used to distribute SIP in Australia (I have a cheap Bunnings SIP compressor) also have their own range of Ross Air compressors, probably also from the Fini Nuair factory based on previous corporate connections. They have one almost a clone of the Stanley, too (not listed on the JW Ross website). JW Ross AIR Compressor 2 5HP 50L Tech AIR Belt Drive | eBay
So at this point if I happened to need lots more compressor capacity for spray painting, I'm thinking a Kaeser or one of similar design from china (SIP, Fini/Nuair/Dari) - direct drive single piston to 350L/min FAD (12cfm) or V-twins go to 430L/min FAD (15cfm) on single phase. The cheaper chinese compressors about don't pump as much air.

Thanks for the heads up on the Stanley compressor.
Last time it was on sale, the local Supercheap didn't have any stock, perhaps I'll have better luck this time.
EDIT: Bugger! Just checked the web page and they're back to $699Geoff

Thanks Fred, I'm sure they'll be on sale again. They certainly seem to be the best value for money when on sale.
