    Default coasting time for grinders

Finally gave away my green grinding wheel that I bought about 10 years ago as I haven't used it since I added a diamond disc to the side of my first CBN wheel.

In the green wheels place I have put a second 200mm x 40 mm Vicmarc CBM wheel.

I've also rearranged the grinder attachments on the 2 x 1HP grinders that both run from one VFD.

Now I have the thin kerf abrasive cutting wheel mini table saw and Multitool Linisher on one grinder - this makes sense because the most common thing I do after cutting a piece metal is tidy up the burs on the cut piece by sanding.

The other grinder thus has 2 CBN wheels - the new Vicmarc CBN and a 6 year old 200 x 40 mm Woodcut CBN wheel.

The Woodcut was balanced using wobble washers a year or so back so I was interested to know how the Vicmarc would go straight out of the box. I haven't done any vibrational measurements yet but sof ar its seems pretty good. There is a bit of Vibe at about 48Hz but increasing the frequency to 52 Hz seems to dampen that out significantly. Eventually I will make the new wheel some wobble washers and play around measuring the vibe again

Another thing I notice is that the grinder with the CBN wheels now takes a lot longer to coast to a stop, 402 seconds to be precise. Now I know the Vicmarc CBN wheel has lot more mass around the edge than the Woodcut wheel but this seems like a long time.

I'd be interested to know what other folks get as their "time to coast to stop"

I have an old GMF 3 phase 8" industrial grinder which seemed to coast for quite a while with a couple of grey wheels on it. Since fitting a Vicmarc CBN wheel the coast time increased markedly, so much that I timed it - just under 12 minutes! Actually, it is a bit dangerous as it is very quiet and could be a potential hazard. I now keep a range of mushroomed head cold chisels close to the grinder and I slow the grinder down by dressing the heads on the coarse grey wheel.
There is very little, if any vibration as it comes up to speed or back to a standstill. The fitting of a CBN wheel is one of the better things I have done, highly recommended!

Wow, 402 seconds. All you need to do now is equip it with regenerative braking and it could make its own electricity.

Even on my dinky 6" A&A grinder the CBN's run for a few minutes after powering down.

Checked the 2 pedestal grinders at work:

6" Waldown CNT/7 1/2 HP 3-phase with a white wheel on one and scotchbrite other end: 2 mins 30 sec from 3000 rpm
8" Brobo Waldown 1 HP single phase with a 6" wheel on one end and 6" scotchbrite other end: 26 sec from 2800 rpm

I posted this a few years back, shortly after I had begun using CBN wheels: my 8” Carbatec half-speed bench grinder takes 8 1/2 minutes to come to a stop.

Hi Bob, I have an Abbott and Ashby 8" grinder with 2 x 25mm CBN wheels on it and it takes 86 seconds to coast to a stop.
