Craftsman Metal Lathe Spindle Will Not Turn, Motor and Pulleys do
I have an old Craftsman 6” metal lathe Mod: 101.21200. Was making a boring cut this afternoon at 0.020” and it dug into the material (aluminum) and stalled, I hit the power and shut down. Moved the carriage out and turned it on, motor ran and pulley turns but spindle doesn’t turn. And no there aren’t any broken gear teeth.
Seems that if there is a shear pin between the pulley and spindle shaft it is sheared. There is a Cir clip on the end of the spindle, I removed it, but the things behind it would not budge, and I don’t want to put any force on anything until I find out the proper way to disassemble it and what is the problem.
Anyone out there know the answer?
Thanks

Has this latching ring gone wrong::

The manual is in the Yahoo group for these lathes but it looks like you already have it from your posts there.

What do they call the latching ring in the attached parts list? Seems I don't see it or could not find it.
I have attached the parts list for the lathe, but because of size limits I had to split it into two documents, hope you can put it together.
Thanks

One new discovery:
When I took the pulley off i did not find a broken woodruff key or anything else that looked broken, so i put it back together.
Then it ran just fine and i completed the boring job and did the second boring job, however sometimes when you turn it on the pulley and gears turn but the spindle doesn't????
I have attached a exerpt from the parts list showing, what do items 11 and 12 do?
Thanks

Number 10 is the latching collar I think - I'm not clear how it locks up but it seems to have a detent spring and ball (11 & 12) that may be where your priblem is.
Check the strength of that spring - it may be letting the lock collar slip out of mesh.
