Default Delta 37-190 jointer price? And rust?

    Hi all,

Recently a bloke I know offered me a Delta 37-190 for 400 bucks. It's 6 years old so I said I'd offer 230 assuming its in good condition. Apparently barely used as his dad died and left it to him.

What do you guys think of this model, and the price for age?

It looks in the pictures that there may be some rust on the infeed and outfeed. Is this a problem with a jointer, can the rust be removed?

If upon inspection it is rusty, would you still purchase it for aforementioned price?

    Cheers all

This appears to be a similar model. Rust on the tables is probably minor surface rust that will be easy to remove.
I would think around $300 would be a fair price.

I had seen that one in my own research as well,

Although it is hafco rather than delta.

He has agreed to the 230 price as hes cleaning shop, so bargain in my opinion. Wouldnt be getting a jointer otherwise.

Does anyone know much about delta machinery? I thought they were largely US based, and couldnt find any over here....? Whats the quality like...

Any suggestions on removing surface rust? (ill also do a forum search as I amagine multiple posts exist) Some of my handplanes could use a cleanup anyway.

    Cheers

Delta are probably mid quality US machines. Probably made in Taiwan right next to the Hafco machines.
A spray with penetrating oil and a light sand should get rid of the rust. Then a good clean to remove any oil residue and a coating of Ubeaut Trad Wax will bring it back like new.

    Thanks NC archer,

    Really appreciate the advice.

Picked up some lanolox (ionox) and used some 300 grit sandpaper. Its come up like a beauty.

    2 quick questions:

    1. I have not waxed it yet... I have some feat and Watson Mastertouch carnauba natural wax for my woodworking. Could I use this? http://www.bunnings.com.au/feast-wat...a-wax_p1565758

    2. Just curious, with the precision of jointers... would sanding it make any difference? Obviously takes off very little, but more so out of curiosity than anything?

    3. Before applying the wax, you said to make sure all of the oil is removed.... I have just wiped over many times with paper towel and old cloths. Any product like soap to break through the oil advised?

Im going to give the instuctions a browse online and figure out all the infeed, outfeed setting etc before using it as this is my first jointer.... Looking forward to seeing the results.

    Thanks again

That wax should be fine to use. I'm not familiar with that wax but if it doesn't work you can take it off again with some turps.
You just need to remove the oil so it doesn't rub off onto your wood work and interfere with the finishing.
Sanding a jointer table will make no difference unless you sand it a REAL lot.
