    Talking Did I do good?

Loml came home friday night after work (Mitre 10) and asked if i was interseted in a new Makita sliding compound mitre saw. It may sound like a dumb question on her part but considering that I already have a makita scms (An old LS 1011) I really didn't think I needed a newy. Apparently this one had been in stock for a while and the boss wanted to get rid of it.
A quick trip to the store on Sat morning revealed a Makita LS1013 for $885.
I hadn't done any research on prices but this seemed a bit too cheap to pass up, so now , I have in my shed the afore-mentioned saw. Until I bought this saw I was more than happy with the one I already had , but this one is Soooo much quieter. Did I do good?

I would have liked a 12" model but this one will do everything I want.
Now what to do with the old one?
The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.

    Dear Steven,

I can't remember ever seeing the Vortex model one like yours for less than nine hundred and something dollars, so you've done pretty well I'd say. It's interesting that you reckon the new one is noticeably quieter than your old one. I wonder if it would be worth your while taking the motor off the gearbox of the old one and throwing a bit of new grease in there to see if it makes it any quieter?...

    Best Wishes,
    Batpig.

Batpig, I think you will find that the old one does not have the 45 degree motor (also had a different rail system) and that the current ones are sold as a quieter option due to the gears used in the 45 degree setup.

Gotcha Burnsy... I wonder if the gears are a little bit helical too in the new one, because I think they might be a bit quieter than the straight-cut ones also. But the other thing is Burnsy - while you're there, without meaning to get off-subject too much - did you ever get anywhere when you were looking around for a lighter type of Combo Jointer/Thicknesser, because I noticed that you were trying to get some feedback on the DeWalt D27300 at one stage. Did you ever find anything else worth thinking about that didn't weigh a ton (even if it was just a dedicated Jointer)? Maybe you could PM me any suggestions in the category...

    Thanks Muchly,
    Batpig.
