Disc Sander.
Hi folks.
My daughter wants me to buy her a disc sander. I need one, my current disc sander is sandpaper glued to a piece of ply, attached to a 125mm face plate that screws into my old 1970s Black & Decker drill, supported in a B&D lathe headstock attachment screwed to a lump of wood. No table (just any old offcut of 4"x4" )
But I don't really want to buy a disc sander. What I'd like to do is attach a 300mm disc to the faceplate of my Wadkin woodlathe (and make up a table that fits into the ways of the lathe).
I looked at the Carbatec website and they sell self adhesive 300mm discs in various grits.
But they also sell a "Starter Velcro Kit" "Starter kit for making a disc sanding attachment for your lathe etc or replacing/converting an existing machine to the ease of Velcro disc changes - Comes with self adhesive velcro backing and 120 grit sanding disc (1 only) to suit - 12inch (300mm)"
So my question is: Is the velcro option too soft? I would guess the mounted disc would be flexible and this would result in less sharp edges etc.
Peoples' thoughts on velrco vrs glued discs please?

I have the velcro on my woodfast disc/belt machine, it’s the ducks nuts. What I’ve found is it’s easy to change the disc and therefore they get used appropriately, not worn out prematurely when you can just change grit and rip heaps off, or change to fine grit for fine fitting work. Haven’t noticed any difference in results really, as compared to contact glued on ones, just much quicker to swap around.

I have velcro setup on my 300mm 3HP disc sander and it works really well - even on metal.
With 3HP Its possible to shift a lot of material (using coarse grit) but a light touch and fresh paper provides a better finish, if you push hard on a hard surface it's too easy to just char the wood or blue the steel.

Hi Vann,
Can’t speak for the hook and loop variety as I have the self-adhesive discs on both my 12 inch and 6 inch sanders. What I can say, though, is that I find the self-adhesive discs a real pain to change, particularly on the larger sander. I went this way because I thought I’d need the firmness of a hard backing to get accuracy on mitre cuts but many members have mentioned getting good results with hook and loop.
If I were doing this again I’d probably go hook and loop. I may yet convert this sander.
Regards,
Brian
