    Default Drill Press Quill

    Hi all ,
Has anyone got ant clues for removal of my drill press quill mechanism. On one side of the press is the handle on the other is the spring to operate the system, I am dismantling the press to refurb it and I don't want to open it and have spring go every where can this happen? I have loosened the grub screw that holds the spring cap on and it moves only a small amount in rotation left and right. I didn't get carried away with it yet in case the flying part's thing is a possibility. Any clues most welcome.
    Regards Rod.

G'day Rod. What sort of drill press is it? Make/model etc. Not all drill presses are equal.
We don't know how lucky we are......

    Thank you for your replies,
Spokeshave I tried that link but it is busy at the moment I will try again soon cheers for that.
Seanz the drill press is actually a old Tough drill press mortise machine with vise and cross slide and lateral movement. I am doing a rebuild and tidy up of this unit and have another thread in antique and collectable about the WIP I have just resprayed first coat of hammer tone today, but I still need to dismantle the handle assembly to repair the handle threads.

If your machine is anything like my old Walker-Turner, you just have to bite the bullet and take the spring off (carefully!). The spring is attached to the end of the down feed spindle which has a pinion gear engaged in the rack gear on the quill. The D/F spindle has to come out before the quill can be removed from the bearings.
    Hope this helps

I have just finished reconditioning my drill press, and faced the same problem. I understand that your drill may be entirely different to mine, but in the hope that there might be some similarities, I will explain how mine came apart. I found that there were two screws under the main housing, adjacent to the quill where it emerges from the main body. One was a conventional countersunk screw which retained the rack and pinion drive gear shaft. The other was a grub screw, on the side near the return spring. I found that I could hold the spring drum outer cap, undo the grub screw, and allow the spring drum to unwind under control. The centre end of the spring engaged in a slot in the end of the drive gear shaft. Once the spring mechanism was removed, the drive shaft could be slid away from the body, holding the quill so that it didn't drop. (I had previously removed the top pulley from the upper end of the quill shaft; it was on a taper). When re-assembling, there were six possible detents into which the spring drum grubscrew could be tightened. I found it helpful to mark the location of these detent positions on the outer part of the spring drum prior to re-assembly. Then, when the drum s=was reinstalled, it was relatively simple to wind tension into it, locate the nearest detent position, and tighten the grubscrew. I hope all this helps!
