    Default Drum sander setups

Im not sure if this is the correct section but there is no sander forum.
Ive been tuning up my Leda twin drum 700 wide sander, getting it working nicely and smooth. However one thing has been niggling at me and that is the adjustment of the cutting depth of the first drum compared to the second. I’ve got 80 grit on the first drum and 120 on the last one. The previous owner I’m certain had no idea how to tweak a machine as the second drum wasn’t cutting at all, which I’ve now fixed, however, I’m thinking that the second drum really should be a smidge lower to get a fine finish. Am I correct?

Check the thickness of the two papers. I would expect the 80 grit to be slightly thicker than the 120 grit. Might need the second drum to be 2 smidges lower. Hopefully the height is easy to adjust.

Best way to do this is to initially have the second roller just missing a passing test piece after it has been sanded by the first roller, then gradually lower the second roller as timber is passing through and listen for the change in sound to tell you the second roller is cutting. You can just put any scrap piece of timber through repeatedly until you get the desired effect from the second roller, just make sure the first roller engages each time.

Paper are so variable, I think any attempt to set it up based on paper thickness is doomed to fail.
