Default Any experience of the Makita LS1211 SCMS

I am looking at a Makita LS1211 in excellent secondhand condition.
It is bigger than I really wanted (more space) but the price is the same as a smaller, new, saw.
Does anyone have any experience of this saw, I think it has been out of production for a while now?
One feature that I like of many newer saws is the horizontal handle
Ignoring Festool, which SCMS brand would be considered equivalent, or better, than Makita?

    Default Makita LS 1211

    Hi ClintO,

I've got an LS1212. About 10 years since new. That's a first quality tool. Works faultlessly and accurately day in and day out including multiple cuts in 75 mm sq, and 100mm sq. black wood for wood turning blanks. I'd be surprised if you could go past it for even the most discriminating work. Mine will still cut the line in half all round a 100mm sq section of black wood and across black wood boards 300mm x 50mm. Try that with a two bob saw from Asia!! My advice would be to get on to it quick if its in good condition. (incidentally mine has yet to cut its first piece of second hand timber)

I second what Old Pete said. I also have had my LS1212 from new and it is as accurate as the day I bought it. I love the 100 tooth carbide tip blade which give a very nice cut and finish.

    Cheers

Any idea how it would compare to the LS1016 or 1216 which are currently available?
They use 4 short bars instead of 1 or 2 large and longer bars

    Clint,

Like the others I have the LS1212. Wonderful saw and the Maks usually are, Don't see a problem with the LS1211 ... the price is right you can't go wrong...it's a mak.

The LS1016 is a beaut to use, used my mates who's a chippy the other day, very nice smooth action and cuts flawlessly with the blue mak blade.

I was talking to him about the 12 inch and he said it's just too heavy to be practical but he rarely cuts much over 100mm and he has to haul it around so weight was a big factor.
