got a fix for Luna planer w59 squeal sound ?
Hi ,
not a big deal but everytime the planer starts the belts squeal. bit over it.
How'd you fix it. Read some bloke had it in his as well.
thinking new belts or some kind of spray to make the belts stick to the pully better.
thanks
Jake

If they squeal when starting, but it goes away when the unit gets up to speed, I suspect the lube in the head bearings is contaminated and solidifing, then softening once the unit runs up to speed. If possible drop the belt off and turn the head by hand looking for friction and radial or end play. Wouldn't hurt to hand turn the motor as well, just in case the bearings have got some dust in them, or the motor guts have.
While the belt is off lay it out on something flat and horizontal and note the shape it takes. If it lays in a circle it should be OK, but if it gets extremely elongated and narrow, it has developed a memory due to stopping in one position too often and too long. Every time you use the tool it will try and stop in that position, and then the motor has to work hard to spring it out of that position and get it running. Ultimately slip will eat into the sides at bends and reinforce the problem. Not uncommon for systems with small diameter pulleys and reasonably powerfull motors.

thanks Malb. Find that very helpful.
Its just a quick sudden high pitched squeal that lasts for say 1/4 a second then alls good after that.
I'll take a closer look.

had a similar problem with a sander at work, turned out that the belts just needed more tension

yes, probably belt tension. Fan belts in cars behave in the same way when they are too loose.

Hi Jake,
FWIW my W69 has never done this. If tensioning the belt doesn't fix it maybe you could try the CRC spray that stops fanbelts from squealing. Not sure if the spray would cause wood dust to adhere to the belt though. Would be worth trying the other suggestions first.
Off topic- have you had any trouble with the centrifugal start switches on any of the motors on the W59? I had the switches in the saw and thicknesser motors fail shortly after I bought mine (second hand). The first time it burned out the start winding. The second time I caught it in time. I couldn't get spare parts from Siemens, so I fitted electronic start switches and contactors. No problems in the 20 years since!
Cheers
