Found this in a road side clean up
Hi All,
My uncle found this in a road side cleanup at Tewantin. I have pulled the motor out of it as it wasn't working when he gave it to me. The grinding head is "Made in Australia by NEECOA" for North Eastern Eng. Coy., MacLeod Victoria. Anyone know anything about these. It still spins well and came with extra wheels. It needs a good clean. Should i clean it with kerosene or use something else.
The motor has a brand on it of "R & F" Eng Prod, Middleborough, Box hill. Its a 1/2hp, 3.7amp, 1400 rpm continuous rating. Has a lot of surface corosion on it. When I switched it on it just made a humming sound. It has an old bakerlite switch which means its pretty old i guess.
Do you think the motor is worth fixing or should i just buy a new one.
Cheers
Michael

Compare the cost of a motor to the cost of a new grinder.
Check the capacitor.
Strip and clean bearings.

Hi DavidG,
Having not a clue about electrical motors and capacitors I wouldn't know where to start. What would be a reasonable price to pay to get it serviced. A new 1hp 1440 rpm motor from Hare and Forbes in brisbane is $120. I think this is pretty cheap.
Cheers

Now is the time to go looking for an old working washing machine and swipe its motor.
Don't let SWMBO catch you though.

Washing machine motor, forsooth!!!! You need a big powerful motor to drive that, who cares what it costs, I thought that the name of the game was self satisfaction.
How satisfying to get an old piece of crud and make it like new, something like that is a fine addition to any workshop.
P.S. I would get the 1 HP motor and slap that on it. It will work a treat.

Does it just need new brushes fitted, If it makes a humming sound, that may well be the case. Find that sparky mate of yours.
