I have successfully used, various thin cardboards eg from a cereal box, covers from exercise books, lino, used high grit number ROS sanding discs, and old school blotting paper.
I once made a car water pump gasket from a Weeties packet and some Vaseline. It was meant to last just to get me to the spare parts place and back but it lasted for a week.

Common name for them is blotters, so I suspect that gives an indication of the type of paper to use most craft shops have it.
