    Default Help with Jointer Required

    Hi,

I recently bought a second hand Artesian combination planer / saw. Its a small machine only 700 x 800 and the saw and planer works on single axle. The reason I bought it, is after reading up on second hand machines, this one seems to be quite well liked, meant to be reliable, built like sh#t brick house.

I'm new to planing and using couple of old wooden floats, I made couple of pushy things (for sake of safety!)

Anyway, I set the planer to minimal (the gauge says zero) and I checked it by sight. Pushing the timber along seems ok. Except the last few inches. I got quite a kick back. Turns out the back deck is so much lower (approx 6.5mm) than the front. Is this normal?

    I've attached some photos...

    Appreciate any advice.

It appears to be set up wrong.
The outfeed table should be set at the height of the cutter or just very slightly below, like a fraction of a mm. The infeed table should be set below the outfeed table by the amount of material you want to remove. Usually just a shaving so less than one mm.
You also need to make sure the tables are coplanar. There is usually some adjustment to ensure this.

Thanks. I haven't been downstairs yet after the frustrations of the day. Over dinner, I was thinking (rare). In my case, the out feed is lower than the in feed. It's all wrong. I don't have a manual either. Based on this morning, I don't think I can get into the inside of the machine. It seems to be welded shut. I'll have another go tomorrow.

I finally got it all set up (I think).

This ancient thing of a jointer is so annoying to set up. First the in feed deck is not adjustable other than its height (both the saw and planer uses the same one piece deck). When I set up the saw, I was happy with set up, saw plate is 90 degree from the deck. The only way to change the way the in feed deck is to change my saw setting which I didn't want to. So I had to make the out feed deck co-planer with the front deck. To make things worst, the design is really annoying, what holds the out feed back is by friction of two plates using 2 bolts, the third bolt pushes the other side upwards. This is my first jointer so I don't know how others are designed but if its me, I would have designed it completely different - using bolts to raise or drop each corner separately.

Anyway, I didn't have feeler gauges and the missus had the car so I had to improvise and use paper. I found some really thin ones (kinda like news print paper). After 3 hours, I can only get it to 1-2 paper thickness differences between the two decks. So in a lot less words, the jointer works like it should!
The only things I still not happy with are: The fence is too small and too short so I'm contemplating making an add-on fence to make life easier. The decks are still a bit small for my liking but I think that will be lot harder to improvise...

Depending on where you are, I could probably come over and have a look. PM me.
