Default Help. How to remove drill press chuck

    Hello all,

I bought a bench drill press from Machinery house. This is the one.
    D590 - BD-325 Medium-Duty Bench Drill - Belt Drive | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse

So this is what happens. It was all working fine and for some reason I wanted to remove the chuck and clean it. I pulled down the quill and insert the drift key tapped with a mallet a few times and it dropped out.

Cleaned it, and inserted it back. Only this morning in realize there is no gap in the quill to fit it my drift key! That is not the usual case so I kept thinking back what I did. I think when I tried to re-insert the chuck earlier, I could rotate the chuck which I could fit the chuck in deeper.

Now I'm stuck. How can I remove the chuck in the future? No gap to fit in my drift key now. Can anyone advise?

I assume you have rotated the quill by rotating the chuck? If you do that it should expose the gap in the quill.

You may have to slack off the grub screw near the tension spring to do as Bob suggested. Note not the nut on the tension spring. You dont want that uncoiling.

They can be lightly tapped up into place, so why not lightly tap it down.
Tighten a bolt into the chuck and tap it lightly and square on to see if that is enough.
Perhaps with a pair of pliers over the bolt head to balance the tapping.
I am NOT suggesting hard/heavy hitting.
More like tapping a jar to open it.
    Good luck

You cannot insert the morse taper deeper than originally installed. When you say you were able to turn the chuck and it went in further, that would be because there is a drive tang on the end of the morse taper and it needs to line up with a slot inside the spindle. When these are lined up the taper will seat correctly but this should still leave a gap at the top to insert your drift to remove it again when required. Like BobL says, you will probably just need to rotate the chuck until the inner spindle slot lines up with the slot in the quill. You were probably just lucky the first time and they were already aligned and therefore didn't need to rotate anything.

    Turn the chuck around ?
Did it have an adaptor to change it down from M3 to M2 and it's fallen off?
