Default Hows this for a start up home workshop?

Just came in from helping my friends from down south shopping to set up their new wood workshop.

    They already have
    Festool ROS
    Festool CT26 Vacuum cleaner
    Carbatech 20" thicknesser
    Carbatech 2HP DC
Plus heap of regular type corded and cordless power tools

    This morning they bought;
    Jet 150 mm oscillating sander
    Jet 14" BS
    Jet 8" Long bed jointer
    Festool 75 mm plunge saw
    Dewalt Router
    Makita Biscuit cutter
    Metabo pro grade SCMS.

They're also going to get a 12" TS.
She is interested in the Sawstop - he is not quite ready to spend that much, so its at a wait and see.
I suspect they will go the saw stop as it's she who mainly does the woodwork.

It sure was fun helping other people spending their money.

You are slipping, how did you let them get away with only a 2HP DC?
That aside it sounds like you had fun and it sounds as if they got some good retail therapy.
It must be nice to start with the right size of every thing straight off.
It sounds more like a restart from scratch than a start from scratch.

    Regards
    Hugh

Enough is enough, more than enough is too much.

I thought someone would pick that it is only 2HP - they bought that without asking my advice
However, I have a cunning plan about this.
The female side of the couple is a neat freak, so it won't take long for her to say, "Bo-ob, my sheds all messy from sawdust - what can I do about it?" and then we go to the next level.
Their shed this is going into is a decent size, 20 x 10 x 4.5 m and one of the long walls can be completely opened up so ventiilation is not a big problem

Nice thing about these friends is they have a 300 acre farm with a second empty house on the property, with lots of logs and trees (some of which I have already helped them mill) and I can go there and stay as long as I like. When I retire in 4 weeks time I will be going there to help them set up all their new machinery and showing them how to use them.

Just a 14" BS it'll be like a scrowl saw to the rest of the gear 17" at least

Are they members of this forum. If so they should have asked questions and I am sure we would have convinced them out of spending on all those machines. Might get them into hand tools.

No they are not and can't see them being either. Both are very product rather than process focussed, that might change but somehow I don't think it will.

Hand tools - that's a long term plan. Sandi wants to make quite large stuff tables and bars etc so starting out doing those by handtools is on the tough side

They wanted to get 2 bandsaws a big one and a small one.
I convinced them to get the 14" first and get maybe a 19" when they need it.

If they are starting from scratch and have limited experience, then a table saw with the "saw stop" would be a good thing.
If it saves one digit then it is money well spent. (Just keep the sausages away ).

Despite how well we concentrate when using machinery it only takes a phone to ring, or some startling noise for an accident to happen.
