So it might be best just to strip away all of the electrics. Repaint the body of the jointer, grease the bearing and then get a new single phase motor? ...... thats what I am thinking.

What starters / switches etc are required for a new 3hp or 4hp single phase motor?

Thanks everybody for the input to date. Good to hear from others.

    Hi SS
Your right, remove the old motor and all electrics and replace with a single phase motor and switchgear.(keep same speed and shaft size)
I'm inclined to think 3hp should be ok as my SCM jointer is 2.5hp single phase and does the job easily.(make sure you get a real 3hp motor, some places in China have very small horses)
You would be wise to have overload and under voltage protection in your switchgear, you may also need an emergency stop button located remotely on the machine somewhere.
Your motor supplier should be able to advise you on this.
In general 3 phase motors have higher starting torque, not much of an issue here as the jointer does not start under load.
    Regards
    Bradford
