    Default JET sanding spindle

I was fortunate to get a 2nd hand Jet JBOS-5 oscillating spindle sander recently.

Had a lot of trouble getting the worn sanding sleeves off the 4 spindles, ended up putting them in the freezer for 30 minutes and then sliding the sleeves off. That worked, except for a couple that had rust on the spindle, and the sleeve had to be torn off. Fortunatley it was only surface rust, and came off easily with a wire brush on the bench grinder.

The 5/8" sanding spindle had a strange slot , and the spare parts manual shows a 6 x 6 x 50 metal key fits in the slot. That key is missing.

Can anyone please tell me what is the function of the key is, and if I can use the spindle without it?

EDIT : Just measured the slot, it is 50 x 5 x 2.5 deep, different from the Spare Parts listing

Any good bearing shop will sell square key steel. You can then cut it and file it carefully to fit.

Thanks riverbuilder. Do you have any idea as to why the key is needed?

The key is not required for the 5/8" sleeves. They utilise the same size spindle for the 1 1/2" and 2" sleeves and it has the key in the spindle to drive the expanding rubber bushing.

Thanks treecycle, that is a relief. Good exlanation, and again, a picture worth a 1,000 words.

I have not yet pulled the 1/2" and 2" spindles apart.

    I am wondering why the key is 6 x 6 x 50 and the slot on my 5/8" is 5 x 2.5 x 50

    Just measured mine and it's definitely only a 5 x 5mm key.

Thanks Dallas, mine is only a 5 W x 2.5 D key. Weird. But I am not going to worry about it, as you said it is not needed on the 5/8” spindle

The keyway in the spindle would probably only be 2.5 deep but the key itself that fits into it is 5 x 5.
