Jig for a Makita Slide Compound Miter Saw
Hi all, I am new onto this site and recently purchased a LS1017L Makita Slide Compound Miter Saw. Yes I realise it is probably at the low end of the market, paying $479 for it from Bunnings. However it seems to be going along nice and smoothly at this stage. One of the things I would like to be able to do with it is, rip say 10mm slices off the side of a piece of timber.
Say I have a block of timber maybe 70x70 and say 200m in length. Or even much wider than the 70. I want to be able to rip 10mm slices off the side using my saw as a rip saw and not a cross cut saw. But I also want to be able to do this without having my fingers to close to the blade naturally. Has anyone any ideas for a jig where I can sit the timber on and keep moving it across as I cut off each10mm slice. The timber would be getting narrower the more I slice. I am also thinking of putting a piece of ply on the base of it, to prevent the timber becoming unbalanced on the plastic type kerf that runs under the blade in the saw slot.
The blade that come with it doesnt seem to bad but I also might see if there is a much finer Makita blade on the market, to give a much smoother cut. Its a 255mm blade.
Thanks, and open for suggestions,
Paul

You're stepping outside the limits of what the saw was designed for; it's the wrong saw for ripping. I suspect you already know that by now.

Just don't do it.
Save up and buy a table saw.
The 2 machines have entirely different applications.

Paul,
you must go to the corner and write out 100 times:
I must never, never, never never try to rip timber on an SCMS.
Even if someone says it is safe with a jig.

I agree. I have a 1214 and have tried the said task. Blade picked up the timber and threw it out the back of the saw at a fair velocity. Lucky my fingers were nowhere near it. If I'm going to rip I use a circular saw instead.

Roger Gifkin is an excellent box maker for which his jig is designed for, i.e. cutting small pieces of relatively thin wood. Even that requires great diligence and care. I would not even dream of ripping a 10mm slice off a 200 x 70 x 70 mm piece of wood.
By far the safest method would be a Bandsaw for ripping, and you can always use a handsaw until you have the funds for a bandsaw. A Bandsaw is also much less costly than having bits of self put back in place.
If you value your digits do not use an SCMS
