Jointer Birthday Present .... decisions decisions
Combined with some savings my wife has given my a jointer for my birthday. So, I need to decide which one and I've got up to $1000 to spend. So -
- I'm going to be limited to a 6 inch jointer. I'd like an 8 inch jointer (heck, I'd like a 12 inch!) but I'd have to go second hand for the $$$. I don't think I'm experienced enough to fix up an old one plus I'd rather get on with the woodworking.
- I'd probably like to do some larger furniture including dining tables, so I'm thinking the longer table length the better.
- I want something reliable in terms of accuracy. I don't want to be frustrated by it not doing what I'd expect.
- I currently don't have access to 15A power, and whilst hoping to move soon I'm unsure about getting 15A and whether it is worth that hassle.
I'm thinking of the Jet 6 inch jointer from Carbatec (who happen to be having 10% of everything at the moment which helps).

I'm not that experienced still so I'm wondering if a) my criteria above sounds ok and I've not missing anything b) are there are other equivalents out there that I'm missing and c) is the Jet jointer a good buy in the end.

My advise would be to save a few more pennies and go for this http://www.carbatec.com.au/x-series-...jointer_c21680 the benifits are not have fiddle around with the old 3 blade cutter head to sharpen the blades as the mini cutters in the spiral head 4 cutters on each.
Experienced in removing the tree from the furniture

I bought the CTJ 150 short bed and it has been a great machine. If you pay attention to the grain direction the finish is very good. If your intention is to do larger stuff I would definitely get the long bed. Blade setup with a jig is fairly easy.

8", 10A plug, long bed, solid construction. Only a smidge over $1k.
I've lost count of the number of times I've wanted to joint a 7" wide board. Or even a 6¼". I know there are work arounds but I would still like a bigger jointer.
Edit: it says 2HP but a 15A plug. I'd swap it for a 10A plug but I'm an electrician

I bought one of these at Christmas and while it runs fine I have found the lack of adjustment on the infeed table a problem as it is not possible to get infeed and out feed coplaner. As well as the fence has a bow and a twist in it.Unfortunately I live in Tassie so returning the jointer is not really an option.

Just my 2c but I wish I had of gone with the jet 8" instead.

Hmm, you guys do make interesting points about an 8inch being better! Aside from price, the 3 phase power thing confuses me a little. I'd have to buy a converter 'thingy' for a grand or two on top of the jointer? Swapping plugs about sounds like something 'not quite legit' but perhaps safe only if you know what you are doing?
Has anybody else had a good or bad experience with the Jet jointers, particularly the 6 inch one?

Well i won't die wondering, you'll be happy to know you've all talked me into the 8 inch Jet, I may have talked myself into it a bit also........and I feel pretty good about it
