Hi guys and gals!

I''m a long time trawler of your forum, searching for info and opinions, and it looks like I've come to the right place! Hopefully I can start to make a contribution every now and again. I'll be sure to introduce myself formally after this post!

I've been building up my tool collection over the last few months. I did a couple of summers worth of work down in Vic when I was younger, making tables at my uncle's joinery, and it's something that I'd like to get back into. Hence the new collection of goodies sitting in my shed!

I bought a Rexon jointer from eBay last weekend (new in the box) and got stuck into assembling it last night. Everything was going well until it came to wiring up the starter switch. I'm not completely useless (being fairly handy round the house) and I have some knowledge of wiring and schematics, but I thought I'd ask for some advice/help/clarification before ruining my new purchase! The manual essentially says "plug the motor wiring into the switch, and plug the power supply lead into the other end of the switch". Easily said! The manual does not appear to cover which wires I'm meant to plug into which terminals!

What I have is this situation (all wires have spade terminals except the earths):

3 wires from the motor- Blue, Green and earth.
3 wires from the plug base- Blue, Green and earth.

The two earths I've attached to the cabinet where the manual indicates, but I'm not sure about the configuration of the Blue and Green wires into the switch. I've attached a JPG of the schematic from the back of the switch.

I'm assuming the following should occur:

Power Blue into terminal No. 1
Motor Blue into terminal No. 2
Power Green into terminal No. 3
Motor Green into terminal No. 4

Is this correct? Any advice would be appreciated, even if it's "Get a sparky to do it for you if you're not sure!".

I think you should consult a sparky for a start the green wires should be the earth, what country is it from is it the correct voltage etc.

Obvious question: what colour is the "Earth"? Active and neutral supplies are normally either Blue and Brown or Black and Red - the earth wire is normally either green or green with a yellow stripe.... which is your set of colours?
If you can't be sure, use a multi meter to at least endure that the earth connection on your power plug is connected to the correct colour wire and that the earth wire from the motor is actually connected to the motor frame. The other two are then the power connections.
Please don't hurt yourself! The risk is that you make the whole machine 'live'! If you can;t be absolutely positive what's what, get a sparky to do it.

China- The earths are Green with a yellow stripe. I know that they're the earths because they have been fitted with connectors to attach to the cabinet where it has the earth symbol (all other wires have spade connectors). It's a Rexon jointer (made in Taiwan?). 10A.

Ticky/Jhovel- Everything has been pre-wired and pre-connected apart from the two-pole switch. I'll post a photo of it, it may make more sense to you then (although I thought that's what schematics were for?).

Hi OrangeGob,
If it has a green active wire then it is not approved for use in Australia. Green is an active colour in China. Check the voltage on the motor name plate to make sure it is a 240V/220V machine.
All that aside, your schematic is correct and that is how you should attach the spade connectors.

I checked the plate on the motor. 240V. 9Amp. 50Hz

Also, I got the colour of the wires wrong in my late night befuddled state. They are in fact Blue and Brown.

The switch is all wired up as per the schematic, now it's time to assemble the tables onto the base!

All good then - sorry about ME mixing up the pairs of colours....

Is it possible that you are red/green blind/weak - like me?
I ALWAYS have to consult my other half to confirm green and brown wires.....

I NEVER trust my own red/green colour perception....

Dan,

I had the same issue when I done mine, unfortunately I am interstate so not able to take a photo for you but your interpretation is correct. Brown being active blue being neutral and you have the earth to the cabinet. Power to switch being brown to pin 1 and brown to motor pin 2.
Blue to pin 3 neutral in, blue to motor pin 4.
