Jointer table length
Hi guys,
I'm thinking about getting a jointer and I have one question: Is there a rule for how long a table you want relative to size of wood you want to flatten? Or to re-word it, is there a rule for the maximum length of timber that the length of a table will be effective at flattening? Every piece of timber I ever see is in some way bowed or cupped (I must be cursed), so I'd want to be getting something long enough for the job...
Cheers
Will

The only practical rule I know of is "as long a bed as you can afford"! You can still joint timber that is significantly longer than a jointer bed but it is harder work because it is more difficult to hold the timber in the correct vertical and square against the fence.
If there is a rule, it is probably that the timber shouldn't be any longer than the combined length of the beds, but with a bit of practice you should be able to joint timber about twice is long as at the length of the combined bed. For longer timber lengths on shorter beds you might need an assistant to hold one end of the board up while you apply the out table feed pressure.
If you can read around the arguments this is an interesting related thread
