Default Kincrome K15320 variable speed drill press. Anybody got one?

I am looking at buying a drill press... I like the idea of variable speed control where you don't have to move the belts around. The JET-JDP2800VS is $1500 and as far as I can tell it is the same machine as the Powermatic PM2800, which has reasonable reviews online in the US. Kincrome has a variable speed drill press K15320 that goes for under $500. I can't find anything else. Does anyone actually have a K1320, how does it go? Does it suffer from "Chinese Quill syndrome". I can't locate a retailer who has one on the floor to go and have fiddle. I know the answer will probably be buy the more expensive JET, but...

My advice is avoid anything of Kincromes that needs electricity.

i have loads of their hand tools but will never buy one of their power tools again

Thanks Damienol, the fact I can't find a stockist with it on the floor was worrying, I think I'll just have to save my pennies. Anyone got the JET-JDP2800VS? How does the speed changer go? Any trouble with it?

I haven't used, or seen, the Jet variable speed drill press.

It does however use a reeves pulley setup to achieve the variable speed and I have certainly used one of those on my previous wood lathe.
They are not the smoothest and most elegant ways of achieving variable speed and prone to belt and mechanical failure. On wood lathes it is only used on the cheaper lathes.

If you want variable speed on a drill press than I would recommend you look at achieving this via a 3phase motor run through a VFD from 240V.

It is one of the projects on my, ever expanding, "todo" list. I have the motor and I have the VFD but..........

From memory at least one of our forum members, BobL, has done this. I'll see if I can find his thread.

    Here it is.

I use a mid range belt and the VFD from 20 to 100 Hz and even short bursts to 120 Hz .
If a 590 RPM is used this gives me a speed range of 236 - 1416 RPM which covers most stuff
This motor has plenty of torque at low sped so I only change belts for drill bits of 3/4" or greater in metal, or to get more speed when using bits smaller than ~3 mm.

Thanks for that! I don't have 3 phase to the shed, but I found a thread about VFD for 240V single phase motor. This is the 1P VFD mentioned.

Anacon Systems, Inc.- OPTIDRIVE E2 for Single-Phase AC motors.

Cool, so... now I need to find a reasonable drill press (under $1000) and then I spend $500 on the 1P VFD and I have a variable speed machine without the draw back of the reeves pully system.

Bugger I read the rest of that thread... and then went back to the product description. You have to start with a compatible 1P motor and "motor drive applications to avoid with single phase shaded pole or PSC motors include belt/pulley loads", which sound a hell of a lot like a drill press... as always, too good to be true

Hmmm... So now it looks like I need a 3P drill press and an appropriately rated VFD for the 1P to DC to 3P AC conversion (with at least double the HP output required) so that I don't draw too much current on the 1P input side and fry the diodes in the rectifier. Does this sound right?

There is no need to spend $500. The chinese VFD I used on my DP cost $130 delivered and I have the same one on my WW lathe and both of these work really well On my MW lathe I have a better quality VFD that cost double the price of the other but I can't tell any performance difference between the two although maybe it will will last longer.

Also don't bother buying a VFD that is double the power rating (you won't fry the diodes if it is set up right) and don't buy a 3 phase DP.
Buy a single phase DP and a used 3Phase motor that is capable of running 240 V 3 phase. I have bought about a dozen of these for around $35 each.
3 phase motors are simple devices that are usually built to last a long time and even if you do your dough you only lose $35.

It's not all plain sailing though as there will almost certainly be some small mechanical issues in mating another motor.
Buy your 1Ph DP first and then there's no rush as you will have the DP in a running state and can measure up and sort the pulley and shaft out for the replacement motor and once everything is ready do it all in one hit.

Thanks BobL, that sounds like good advice.
