carbatec oscilating spindle sander issue
just went to use this today and notice it not to be running true - not a tool i use a lot and i have to admit the sanding sleeves have been on the spindles a long time - several years in fact
i put on the largest diam spindle i think its a 2" and it is so badly out of whack it was hitting the job on about 70% of the spindle - the 1 1/2" not so bad it hits all the way round but it is vibrating more than i would like
do the sleeves distort over time or the rubbers go out of shape ??
the sleeves seem to have shrunk on pretty tightray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

I noticed the same thing on mine a week or two ago. The drum I've been using seemed to have runout that I hadn't had before with the same drum. I sort of ignored it, but might have another, closer look in the morning.
Mine's not the Carbatec one, it's the Scheppach OS-58 from H&F.
At least it appears that it's probably the drum/sleeve and not the machine, since we have different machines but the same problem.... Steve

Is this the industrial heavy duty one or the desktop unit?
First thing I'd try is to release the tension, remove the tube, flip it end-for-end and re-install. If it continues to miss in the same place then it is the rubber, if it moves up the top it is the tube.
EDIT: How tight is it done up? Could it be over-tightened?

the nut isn't done up tight at all - i had it off yesterday - finger tight plus a full turn with a spanner
the sleeve is on so tight i doubt i can get it off with out tearing it off let alone get it back on again
i have a spare but it is shrunk on the ends - ie turning inwards at the top and bottomray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

If it sticks on the spinde or has visible distortion, then the rubber is 'gone'. Happens eventually to most thick rubber components, along with 'alligator skin' after a while. I think it depends on what additives they use for the vulcanising process, and exposure to UV light (flouro lights) and weird chemicals around the workshop.
Two things to do: Firstly, see if you can get spares from Carbatec or H&F. If not, you could cast new ones in a flexable polyurethane resin - one mob to try would be Era Polymers who do have suitable resins, or Barnes Products who may have something & sell in small quantities but are expensive.
If you are casting you own then you need to look in the pen turners section for ideas on mold making - polyurethane will stick to almost anything (except itself & usually silicone RTV) unless you use a release agent.

sounds way past what i am capable of doing or able to afford
i got the rubber off and found the key out of the slot in the rubber
the rubber runs ok without a sleeve
i just managed to squeeze on a sleeve today and it runs good enough
had to use talcum powder and a bit of a thumping but it went on
btw c/tec doesnt stock sleeves or spindles for this model anymore
it says the sleeves are available "on request" which is is likely to be code for "we might get some in 3 months or longer"ray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'
