    Default MS3140 drum sander

Hello all, I'm after some advice on a purchase of a second hand drum sander (ms3140) it seems to be a generic Chinese machine sold under various brands. I'll add a link here-- Ms3140 Drum Sander With Max Sanding Width 405mm With Stand - Buy Drum Sander,Woodworking Machine,Sanding Machine Product on Alibaba.com -- its an open ended, single drum, 1100w, various speed feed etc. It looks like a okay starting point for me as I don't have the money for a nicer one at this stage. They are asking $350, I've offered $300. Does this price sound okay? any advice welcome, good or bad! Cheers, Ash.

$300 sounds OK to me, if it's in good/original condition. Probably worth around $800 new - my Hafco one was and it's pretty similar.

I notice that it has a couple of extras not usually found on this type of drum sander too - the stabiliser on the outside end of the drum assembly, which seems like a very good idea to stop flexing. Also, the table extensions to extend the conveyor length would be very handy on mine, but not supplied. The conveyor itself is longer on mine, though. No wheels and handles with mine, either.
Another point is that many of the 16" drum sanders only have a 2 1/2" dust port whereas the one you're looking at has a 100mm port. Much better.

    Hope this helps.

N.B. You can get sandpaper rolls from The Sandpaper Man and cut to size.

    Hermit said it all really.

The Carbatec one, which I have, sells new for over $900 and it does not have the stand.
That outboard support looks like a great idea, I must look into making one of those and the big dust port is a great idea - these things really need lots of dust extraction or they really bog down.

thanks for the replies, I got a email back saying he accepted the offer of $300. I just have to wait a couple of week for it to arrive as they are driving up my way and will save on postage.

I met him at Tailem Bend yesterday and picked it up. He was a very nice man that's decided it's time to start down sizing his work shop. It's a very sturdy looking machine. After the 340 km round trip my wife and I had the pleasure of taking it off the back of the ute and wheeling it through the garden to the back door of the shed as some silly bugger (me) had parked the boat in front of the sliding door...! As we were lifting it off my wife decided to let go to get a better angle, leaving me on the ground with a big sander on my stomach! After a few seconds of recovery time from my near crushing to death experience we started to move across the lawn to the shed. About half way my wife (who was wearing thongs) smashed her little toe nail into the frame. She let the whole world know how much that hurt. For a nice quiet girl she certainly knows a few words that would shock a truck driver! After another recovery session we decided to make the last part of the journey. As I lifted up the heavy side of the machine I some how managed to put my thumb in the hinge and crush all the life out of it in a split second. blood immediately started pooling up under my thumb nail, dam it hurt. By this stage I was really starting to get a true hatred for this god awful machine that had beaten us down so much in less than ten meters of travel... After I walked around in circles repeating some of the fine words my wife had been saying a few moments earlier we moved it into the shed, I was pushing it forward and my wife was pulling it, she did such a good job she didn't even stop to look behind her and reversed her spine straight into my brothers motorbike. This time the rage was in her, the look she gave me was one of pure aggression. She didn't say a word. She didn't need to. So in the end I have a drum sander, I have mixed emotions about it at this stage. I'm sure it will sand timber very well but it's going to go down in history as the hardest machine move to date. bloody thing...

Curious as to how the sander is going mate...?

Also, have you both recovered from the experience of getting it in the shed?

HAHAHA yeah, all the scars have healed! as for how its going, well I don't know yet??? I drove to CarbaTec (4 hour drive, 200km) and bought sand paper for it, got home only to find it's 4cm to short. This seems to be a recurring pattern with them. Buy something they assure me is the right part only to have to drive all the way back to exchange it a week later... I think I will start only buying online now as customer service just isn't what it used to be.

Instead of buying pre-cut belts from Carbatec, (and finding you have the wrong size), it might be better to buy rolls from the Sandpaper Man online and cut them to size yourself. You can trace the old one for the length and end tapers. Much cheaper, and a better quality polyester cloth-backed paper. I buy the 5m rolls which gives me 2 replacement belts per roll.

I just had a quick look and there appears to be a 25% off sale at the moment - you can get a 5m roll of 120G for $19.64.

Bugger! Hope you let them know how they stuffed you around. Let us know how you go. Sounds like the sander could be cursed.

I'd be defiant too, if I drove 200km and was given the wrong length belt.

IMG_20191202_121443.jpg Hello. My friend had a broken switch in MS 3140. You wanted to replace it yourself. He disconnected all the cables, but did not take the picture. Don't have a wiring diagram? Or take a photo ? Thank you very much.
