Default Nail gun for use in DIY house extension?

    Hi all,

I'm new here and new to DIY/reno's, so be gentle.

I'm looking over the next year or so to extend the house (low-set), adding two new bedrooms, kitchen, front landing and a back deck (and refroofing, but that's being done by pros). I haven't got that much in the way of tools as I'm just starting out in my handyman life (I'm a late bloomer!). I was wondering whether buying an air compressor and framing gun would be worthwhile? Cost is a primary motivator, hence why I'm owner-building. I think I could use it for the wall framing, weatherboards (scyon linea), and the landing/deck.

I'm looking to buy this combo:
Rockworth Compressor and Framing Nailer Combo - Masters Home Improvement

I'd love to get your thoughts on whether this combo would actually be up to the job. Also, can I even use the nail gun for those tasks? (wall framing, weatherboards, deck).

Finally, any general tips for using an air compressor? I've never used one before, so any advice gratefully received.

    Cheers all,
    Adrian

I bought this framing gun at trade tools like 12 years ago and its done a heap of work and still going
    https://www.tradetools.com/category/...s/framing-guns
With the compressor the smaller ones will have to run more to keep up with the gun if you push it
https://www.tradetools.com/category/...ase-belt-drive , i have one of these $650 but i bought it at the same time and a good comp with last donkeys years, its big enough to run any nail guns, ive used it for spray painting, running all sorts of air tools ...worth the money, thing to remember if you buy a good compressor its the heart...say your then doing some decking and need a coil gun for just that job you can just go hire one for the day...

Default Nail gun for use in DIY house extension?

A basic compressor and nail gun will be fine for basic work. I've got a super cheap auto compressor and framing gun, plus a smaller brad nailer. They all work fine for what I do with it.

I made the mistake of buying an Aldi metal cutting saw, which clearly needs far more air than my compressor can readily supply. Moral to this story is that cheap compressors are good for blowing a bit of air and running a nail gun, but probably not much more.

Perhaps a dumb point, but a nail gun and compressor would not be the first things n my list to buy if I was just starting out with tools. A quality hammer, circular saw, scms, cordless drill/impact driver would all be much further up the list. But perhaps you have this stuff already...

problem is a framing gun wont do all the tasks you want.

decking is usually done with a coil nailer (or even better screw the boards down), as are weatherboards.

finishing you will want a finishing gun.

You don't need much in the way of a compressor. nail guns dont use a lot of air. I run a cheapie GMC and its fine.

I own a hitachi coil nailer and DA finishing gun, and a cheap brad nailer. I get a chippie in to do framing so we use his gun for that.

Keep in mind all of the above tasks used to be done with a hammer. So you dont *need* any of these guns really. They are bloody great to have though

Don't forget Adrian, the gas cartridge (no compressor) cordless Nail guns, fwiw love em myself and you don't have to lug the comp or get the bloody hose caught up while you are climbing about the framing etc. A decent quality gas gun will probably run out cheaper the the comp, gun and hose assembly.

Get as good compressor as you can afford, it will pay you back quickly. If you're going to do house extension yourself,
you will save enough to cover the cost.

I wouldn't buy the combo. Cheap guns often jam and ruin your work. Good ones are pleasure to work with.

If the price matters, get a good nailer from Amazon, try Hitachi or Senco - often more than half of our price.
    You will never regret it.

Get a good finishing gun for C series nails - make sure that it will take longer nails, up to 50 mm/

Good framing guns can be expensive - you can always hire one when you need it.
I have a framing gun, but only used it few times. Finishing gun(s) and staplers - almost every day.

You will find quickly that the compressor has many uses - cleaning, pumping tyres, naling, stapling, painting, engine cleaning, even riveting (air riveters are awesome).
    You're going to love it.

    Good luck
