    Default Oil leak in Jet drum sander

    Hello, prior to Xmas 2013 I purchased a Jet 10/20 drum sander. It was unpacked and sat for a few months while I completed other projects demanding my attention, in between cyclones and heat waves. I put aside Easter long weekend to do a mobile cabinet and get it working.

    I found two major problems which brought my good intentions to a sudden halt:

    1. When moving it from the table where it has sat for months, I found a large oil spill under the conveyor belt motor, quite thick oil like gearbox oil. On starting up the belt motor at half speed, without any timber in the machine, there is a reasonably loud clunk noise every 2 seconds or so. On turning up the speed, the frequency of the clunks increased.

    2. There are two white plastic tracking pieces that guide the conveyor belt and which are fitted under the belt. The one furthest from the motor is causing the belt to buckle underneath, and there appears to be no way to prevent this. The one on the right, nearest the motor, is OK. The only way I could get the belt to work wothout buckling was by removing the LH side tracker, so now the belt is wandering all over the place.

    Has anyone experience either of these problems? I am not sure if I should run it with the loss of oil.

    Any suggestions on how to improve the situation?

    Default Oil loss

    I wouldn't run it until the oil leak is found and topped up to the correct level. I had a similar oil leak problem on my Jet bobbin spindle sander. It had sat for a while and when I moved it it had a pool of gear oil under it. I cleaned it all up and found that the little window that you check the oil level was the source. The sealant that Jet had used had failed and caused the leak. I cleaned it all up with turps and thinners to get it oil free and dry then I re-sealed it with the correct sealant. refilled the oil and it hasn't leaked since. Don't run the machine dry because the oil is there for a reason.

    I've been quietly sitting back watching for replies to this thread. Mine's a Hafco, but I have that same horrible noise coming from my conveyor drive, especially after it's been running for 5 min or more. You've got me wondering about oil. (No puddle, but maybe there's no oil at all in mine.) It looks like a mission to disassemble it, but I think I'll put in the effort and have a go. If nothing else, I'm sure some grease won't go astray.

    Does your's have screw-type tracking adjusters, or only the guides? If so, perhaps a play with them is in order. Mine has no guides, only the screw adjusters, and my belt runs fairly true when they're adjusted correctly.

    Have you contacted the seller, Carbatec I assume, about these problems?

    If nothing else, this post will give the thread a 'bump'.

    Thanks for the above replies. I have stopped using it, but I was only at the commissioning stage anyway. The motor would not have run more than 5 minutes, one minute or less under load with a piece of timber.

    I have sent an email to Gregory Machinery, from whom I purchased the sander, asking them to do warranty repairs with Lek-Tek here in Townsville (they do warranty repairs for Festool, Makita, Bosch etc), but am not hopeful as Carbatec have now taken over as the sole supplier of Jet equipment, and GM are focussing on Laguna. My experience with Carbatec in the past has not been good for repair and parts replacement.

    Will let you know how it goes

    PS This machine only has the plastic trackers which are supposedly held in position by magnets on the rear mounting steel bracket, but my LH one is not magnetised

    Default GOOD NEWS !!

    Hi Everyone, good news, thanks to Carbatec.

    I emailed Gregory Machinery, the company that I got the new Jet 10/20 drum sander from, but did not get any response. ( Bastards!! I had just spent $2,000 on a Laguna bandsaw from them)

    I then emailed Jet in the US, and they promptly replied, advising me to get in contact with Carbatec, being their sole distributor of Jet in Oz. Within a few days I received a phone call from Mark at Carbatec, telling me to get it crated and he would arrange shipping at his cost back to Brisbane, and would repair or replace the unit.

    Within a week or 10 days after it arrived back in Brisbane, it was fixed and ready for shipping back to Townsville, and a few days later it arrived safe and well, no oil leaks, no strange noises, and the belt tracking properly. During the course of this their communications were excellent, I knew exactly what stage the sander was up to, although they did not advise what the problems were, or the likelihood of any re-occurrence.

    You do hear a lot of complaints about Carbatec poor customer service, but this is a classic example of outstanding service for an item that they did not even sell to me. I cannot speak highly enough of them

    Default 'ray for Carba-Tek

    Great news for you to get your Jet drum sander fixed and a pat on the back for Carba-Tek for their adherence to your warranty issues.

    Bad news travels fast and here there may be a few less footprints gracing Gregory's doorway with their after sales service being called upon or lack of interest in your case that you have mentioned here to your issues that you so rightly placed in their hands.

    Good service always undoubtedly gets footprints through the door.

    Good one Joe. I'm glad to hear that Carbatec looked after you so well.
    They could do with some good PR.

    I've had problems with getting replies to emails from Gregory Machinery too. I tried 3 times at one point, then gave up and bought elsewhere, (H&F).
