I had a feeling there was a reason for the difference in price - there usually is.

From where I am, inspection of the Timbecon unit isn't possible, so many many thanks for your invaluable input!

The Jet uses 150mm sleeves as compared to the Sherwood at 115mm but unless you are sanding very tall items this is not an issue. If only sanding thinner items both sleeves can be flipped over so you use up both ends.
I would be concerned about the availability of sleeves in the future as they are readily available from The Sandpaper Man in both lengths. Don't forget to get one of the gristle cleaners to keep the sleeves clean otherwise they can clog up the grit quickly especially with the likes of pine and other resinous woods.

Was speaking to Carbatec the other day and they are having major issues with Jet atm and are no longer stocking their range until further notice. Hence the sale on all Jet items so any stock they do have is floor/warehouse stock.

Having said that, if you see yourself using it regularly nab it up before they are all gone. I have an el cheapo unit from Hare and Forbes, is it rough as guts sure is, does it do what i want it to do, sure does. Do i wish i spend more on it not really.

It seems that every couple of years somebody has trouble with obtaining stock from Jet and looks at dropping them.

Get the Jet

I've one of the smaller models, more benchtop generic. It is the OS-58 from Scheppach.

It may be a lot smaller than the other two, but I can say for the $200 that was paid for it, it certainly has earned its keep.

Dust has not been a problem. I used it for hours during commercial work. The plug-in for the hose and the insert for the spindle captured everything meaningful.

They are fantastic machines, but if given the choice between the $200 Sheppach and the $500 Jet, Id go for the Jet every time. When I bought, the Jet was a grand. Ouch!

For spindles, TSPM has extremely good ones. If you are after bulk, Amazon USA has them very cheaply.

Treecycle is right, the gristle stick is worth the money.

..... and I've got this one which looks like the same as the Sheppach and works brilliantly and sleeves are readily available. I don't think the Jet is worth the extra. The triton also has a 3 year warranty.

FWIW the Sheppach at the mens shed lasted about 3 months (during which time it was heavily used) before the motor died. It could have been a "one of" , and I also cannot vouch for the (lack of) skills of the users. We got ours from hare and forbes and they willingly replaced it but they did say it was not meant for HD use.

Decision made based on the input of all here, Jet ordered, paid for and being sent out over the next couple of days.

Appreciate your candid responses and insightful information - I do agree, Jet is getting hard to come by, not sure why, as the other items I have from them seem good to me.

So true, Carbatec have had more than one go.

Good choice. I am very happy with all of my Jet gear. I also picked up this spindle sander a couple of months ago when the sale started. It had been up around $650- I think a little while ago. Haven't opened mine yet but it looked far better in the shop than any other small spindle sander i've seen. Enjoy!

37.5Kg of sander landed on my doorstep today, boy it's heavier, and larger than I thought (this is a good thing, I like good, heavy kit that looks like it wasn't skimped on materials when it was built)

It'll take a while before this gets used in anger - we're getting restarted on a workshop fitout that got delayed for several consecutive reasons (budget, time, heat, Christmas - pretty much in that order!).

Hey Dom or Midnight Man (or anyone else), I know you haven't had it long, but would you think the bench top model would handle life in a school workshop? I'm tossing up between being able to buy 2 of these for less than the floor standing unit.
