Another PaulCall Jointer question.
G’day,
I’ve just been gifted an old Paulcall 6” jointer (model P2). It’s in good nick, but is missing the motor and both pulleys. Because I love old tools and a challenge, I’m going to bring it back to life.
Can anyone here please help me with an approximate cutter head rpm for this machine?
I can’t find a manual online but I’ve seen lots of photos, including one that showed what looked like the original motor. Its data plate stated 1425 rpm. All the pics I’ve seen show a larger pulley on the motor than the cutter head... about a 1:2 drive ratio so I’m guessing the cutter head should be spinning at about 3000rpm? It’s a 3-bladed cutter head, about 75mm in diameter.
I’m mechanically-minded and reckon I can get the job done.... I just need to know how fast the cutter head should be spinning.
Any advice most welcome.
Thanks,
Scott

I will check what is on my Paul Call jointer (was my father’s) when back home. With travel restrictions easing we went away for a couple of nights in the caravan.
From memory the pulleys on the jointer is very small & the one on the motor is large. But I don’t think the small pulley on the jointer is original. Also the jointer stand is home made steel & wood so not sure where the motor came from. I am fairly sure my father purchased it new. He was a builder and used to take it to job sites Back in the days when he used to build everything including kitchen & bathroom cabinets.

From my Paul's (Merchants) Pty Ltd catalogue of the 1980s:
Maximum depth of rebate 1/2" (13mm)
Speed: 4,500-5000 rpm
Recommended horsepower 1/2-3/4 hp
Recommended motors: 1/2 hp 1425 rpm or 3/4 hp 1425 rpm with 4 1/2' (114mm) x 1A Vee pulley, A48 Vee Belt.
1/2 hp 2850 rpm with 3" (76mm) x 1A Vee pulley. A46 Vee Belt.
Cutter pulley is not mentioned in the specs, but I suspect it was 1 1/2" dia.
I Hope this helps.

Will attempt to post photos of the pullies. Sorry could not get a photo of the motor specifications plate as it is not visible without removing some dust/shaving duct.

I think Petet57's pulleys as shown are the correct size for a 1425rpm motor and the machine, as shown by the photos. The catalogue must have a misprint to show the motor pulley as 4 1/2" diameter.
A 3" motor pulley for a 2850 motor works out to a cutter speed of approx. 4885 rpm. The 5 1/2" pulley gives 4420 rpm from a 1425 rpm motor.

Thanks Chas. I split the difference and just ordered 5” & 1.5” pulleys and a 1400rpm motor. If my maths are right I’ll have a shade over 4600rpm at the head.
