kmthor, they are not doing anything illegal, just immoral.

There is plenty of evidence out there. Just watch ACA or TodayTonight and you'll see how the supermarkets behave when there is a good greengrocer or butcher nearby. Bunnings are just a supermarket for hardware, not food.

Understand this: I don't begrudge you your right to your opinion, nor your right to express it, but there are at least two sections of this forum well suited to this discussion yet it comes up over and over in other areas. It is the type equivalent to barging in on someone else's conversation , changing the subject and talking endlessly about what YOU want to discuss.

Poor form IMO.

Wooden Ewe? Was making a first post, and may I just say thank you very much for it. While I already had that information the post was intended to help others out saving some $ and to celebrate a new purchase. Well done that person, and I hope your not scared off this forum by what followed. All the people here are helpful and gracious most of the time and most are all of the time. Hang about and like me you will surely have many positive experiences.

And congratulations on your new tool.

Fully agree with that sentiment.

Why they don't start their own ranting thread against the big bad retailers I don't understand, or is it that maybe then nobody will look at their opinions.

Yes Damian I do have to admit that I wasn’t really expecting over 30 replies to my first post!! I most certainly didn’t put the post up on the forum to spark a massive debate. I was as you say- celebrating a new purchase. I don’t have the dollars to purchase brand new Festool machinery so a brand like Bosch is the best quality, most achievable brand I can afford. And if I happen to get it cheaper then thats more money for me to spend on other stuff..like tools I do the Ebay thing also but gain the most satisfaction from buying old tools such as Disston, Titan, Turner etc, (most of which are Australian made) from garage sales and restoring them back to their former glory.
This experience has not scared me off by any means, but rather, highlighted the diversity of the members on this forum. Not only are you all passionate about woodwork, you are all passionate about looking out for each other and the wider community. I look forward to continuing as an active member of this forum as I am sure that there is not only a mammoth amount of information and experience here but also, a bunch of genuine, like minded, creative and caring individuals. Thank you to everyone who posted on my thread and thank you Damian for your concern and support.

The topic was a purchase from Bunnings using the "beat it by 10%" method. My post (and those from several others) pointed out the hidden cost of that approach. Directly ON topic.

But that's OK, I'm sorry I broke your rules. Go ahead. Shop at Bunnings. Screw anyone you can. Just don't complain when you run out of choice in your area, when prices go up, and when your choice of tools is limited to whatever they got from some made-in-China sweatshop for the lowest possible price.

I guess that makes up for the time I posted about finding some square hollow steel in a small hardware that was cheaper than bunnies but I decided to not take the 10% deal because I wanted to support the small hardware. All I got was a zillion posts telling me what a fool I was. No matter what you post you can't win

Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for the ACCC or any such body to get involved. What Bunnies choose to do is their business, it's just that I don't happen to like it and just want to make people aware of the possible final outcome. If they want to lose money and sell below cost, so be it.

To give you some idea just how they operate, I got a call at work asking for the price of an obscure sealant we stock. When I asked who was calling (as I always do in case I need to call back), the bright young girl who called told me it's so & so from Bunnings. I gave her a special price (sic).

There can be no other reason for Bunnies offer to beat a price by 10% other than to slowly erode at their opposition until they all disappear. I'll keep doing my bit to stop that happening, and thank you to all the others who share the same sentiment.

I have posted a few Topics regarding the Big B. Especially on the Gold Coast. They are on a price watch with me as I am finding more and more that in some specialty areas their prices are as much as 25% dearer.

I feel it has got worse since they decided on that 19 billon deal on that dog of a company Coles- Myer.

Rather than take up the 10% deal at Bunnings I attempt to support small business that will match the Big B. But if I think the small business does not deserve the support, so be it.

Star ( Small business owner. ) but not in hardware or lines that Bunnings sell. But many of my clients do.

Bunnies tactics matter not, they are slowly declining into a supplier of chinese crap. It used to be you could buy quality tools there, I was shocked last time I was in there with how much crap was there.

Bunnies have a place, 90% of people would buy a quality tool from a good HW store and use it once. Bunnies is their answer - suits them fine.

Forums like this and the internet generally are a bigger threat to the small advise laden supplier. I can get 50 opinions on what to buy, reviews and comparisons on the internet. If I have done all the research and made a decision on what to buy I am entitled to buy at the cheapest price similar research uncovers. I recently bought a compressor (sick of manually pumping up tractor tyres), I travelled to a small supplier that stocks quality tools (100Km trip), I know nothing much about compressors and relied on their advise. Turns out I had been given fittings that didnt fit, the connector to the regulator didnt have a shutoff when the hose was pulled and the air intake filters were broken.

I'll continue researching independently and buy the cheapest I can find.

Not mention soft furnishings and other household wares!

I suppose that what we have to hope for is that some other equivalent places that exist now (eg Gasweld, Coventry Fasteners, or even Mitre 10) see this and take the opportunity to provide a better service for tradies and serious amateurs.

The good news is that is has happened before - remember Nock & Kirby's whihch went the way of Bunnings and got taken over by BBC (before Bunnings then took over BBC). It is likely, economics being what they are, that it will happen again.
