Default Replace drive belt on belt/disc sander.

    G'day guys,

I need to replace the drive belt on my belt/disc sander.
I am by no means mechanically minded, but I just cannot see how to do it.

The make is a Sherwood model 6"/9" 2135. Although I should think all makes are very similar.

Sherwood agents in WA are Timbercon ( con being the appropriate word) can't be contacted by phone or email.

Would really appreciate help or suggestions

Timbecon have gone into receivership and have been bought out by the original owners.
They are re-openeing in a couple of weeks in Cannington and will continue to support the Sherwood brand of stuff.

Why not post a few pix from a few angles and let the might of the internet work it out for you!

Google shows zippo for this model.

Thanks "dusteater", where is your disc sander positioned ?
Mine has the 9" disc on the end of the shaft that also drives the belt.

On the first photo..on the left hand end of the roller I have remove a cir-clip ?? which gives me a small amount of movement, but not enough.

    Col ,
Yours is a bit different to mine ,pics below.
The problem is you have to remove the disc to access the belt , mine is easy as I can access the shaft and unscrew two screws to release the disc from the shaft. But I noticed on the parts graph [image 3] that I posted earlier that there is a central screw that holds the disc to the shaft [No 28] which is different to mine, so you might find that there is a screw behind the hook matting glued to the disc face.and then it`s a matter of persuading the disc to come off .Worth a look.

Are you able to just roll the belt off the motor pulley as in the picture below, and then squeeze it out around the disc by pushing the sheetmetal guard back?
To roll the belt off, you just insert a small screwdriver under the belt and lever it off the flange of the pulley towards you as you rotate the pulley around by hand. You could use the sanding disc to rotate everything if it is too hard to turn the motor pulley itself.
If this works, then it would just be a matter of reversing the procedure to put the new one on.

If the disc guard is the same as mine then it is made from cast alloy and no room to move it back, not good to force. But good idea anyway. The disc has to come off because someone put it on in the first place.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I can't bend the cover out to get the belt off as the metal is too thick & also added is the fact that it is "L" shaped around the disc.

Had another look at it & I think there is a bolt etc in the end of the shaft, which is in the centre of the disc.
The only way to find out is to remove the "velcro" disc which is glued on pretty good. The glue looks like contact adhesive to me.

    Thanks again

Will try to sort it out later this week.

Finally got the bugger sorted, after hours of puzzling. There wasn't an Allen screw in the centre of the disc.

IN the grove of the bottom pulley wheel there is a "grub screw" which is undone with an Allen key.
Then was able to get a torch & mirror to see up & behind the top pulley wheel, there I found a "grub screw" with a slot which we could just reach to undo.
With 2 large screwdrivers levering the disc forwards & tapping the centre it finally, very slowly came off.

Nipped in to see Michael at Peel Bearings Tools & Fittings, Mandurah WA, great bloke who really knows his trade. No problem costs $7.60

Should be up & running later this morning.

Thanks for the help & advice.
