Replacement gas strut for Jet JFM-5 Hollow Chisel Mortiser
Hi,
Has anyone been able to buy within Australia a new gas strut for their Jet mortiser. I have looked on the web and they range from $160 - $180 usd + postage ( genuine part). They appear to be a special type with each end threaded. Has anyone adapted supercheap type?
Kind Regards,
Ross

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to use a generic replacement providing it has the same dimensions or similar. Below is how to size a replacement and if you need threaded fittings on the end they are available to purchase too. The force measurement is an important factor to look for too.

Thanks Treecycle for the leads. All went well until I needed the pressure rating. How on earth do you work that out? There isn't a sticker on the old one.

Thanks Lappa,
The biggest problem with that is shipping. Over $100 US. I can get a part here but I don't know what NM pressure rating to buy it in. You get a choice that they can set it to.

I have a Carbatec Morticer which I would expect to be similar to the Jet design. I took the strut off and pushed down on the bathroom scales and got a reading of around 20kg which equates to 200Nm
Here is another page from the site I referred you to which shows how to calculate the force if you don't have it.
My strut is an 8/18 with 320 ball centres when fully extended.
