    Default Replacing flywheel on compressor

I had a mishap with my belt-drive compressor and now the flywheel is broken.

By ‘flywheel’ I’m referring to the large (280mm) spoked pulley on the compressor head that the drive belt goes around.

The place where I bought the compressor has long since closed down.

Where would be the easiest place to get one of these - in the sense of what sort of shop would sell them. Are they reasonably generic?
    Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.

They are unlikely to be generic.

It might be repairable - Some photos would be useful.
What sort of material is is - I assume it's Al of some kind?

You might be able to source a spare from an engineering supplier such as Blackwoods or CBC. It’ll probably take an “A” size vee-belt. What you need to identify though is the exact size and type of the bore where it goes over the compressor driveshaft; is it parallel or tapered, does it have a square or woodruff key? If it’s something simple like a 3/4” parallel shaft with a 5/32” square key you have a fighting chance; otherwise maybe a visit to your local tip shop and see if they have a busted unit you could buy for parts.

    Default A photo

    Here’s a photo.

All the spokes have been broken off, so you can see the hub (still on the shaft) and the rim (fallen down, of course).

The flywheel appears to be aluminium. It’s very soft material.

    Cheers

Another thing to consider is that the flywheel spokes are in fact fan blades to cool the compressor.

It's not really a fly wheel - its just a big pulley and you right - its stuffed.
'As CT sats you will need to get the hub off the compressor pump section shaft so you can see what the connection to the shaft is like and the call up compressor places to see if they can help.

It does not have to be exactly 280 mm, anywhere between about 250 and 300 mm would still work.

I would post this over on the metal work forum as it is much more likely that someone over they might have a spare.Does the compressor have a brand? If so that might help.

I think Bohdan is right. I think the blades were oriented in such a way to make it function as a fan. I hadn’t thought of that so thanks.

Obviously this is not something generic off the shelf, so I think I’ll pull the hub off and take it to Mann’s Road in West Gosford where there are several tool/machinery shops. That might be a good place to start.

    Thanks for the help.

Have you tried the various compressor manufacturers?
This is just grabbed from a Google for "air compressor parts", and I note they do second hand, so may carry bits for brands other than their own

Tool and machinery shops as such may not be a lot of help as they generally deal with particular brands while they are new and intact. Unless it is a model that they sell, there would be little chance that they would know much about the pulley and shaft interface, and no chance that they would partly dismantle floorstock to find out for you, as that would devalue their stock.

If Pulfords do repairs or sell used units, it is much more likely that they would be able to match the pulley for you. To give them the best possible chance, take some quality photos of the compressor head and tank, and any data plates or other identifying info that might help them.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
