    Default Sander name

Below is a picture of a homemade sander. Can anyone tell me what the name of it would be in Australia and a brand who makes them commercially.

    Thanks,

That sander is sometimes called an Unsupported belt sander.

They are commonly used by knife makers and metal workers.

Aussie made quality (and very expensive) versions of these are Radiusmaster but there are smaller and cheaper versions of these out there.

    Dallas,

They are a 1" belt sander and used to be available about 8 or 10 years ago. There used to be 2 brands available from Carbatec.

I bought the Carbatec branded sander and still use it occasionally, mainly to grind the ends of bolts and threaded rods smooth after cutting to size. Makes threading nuts on much easier.

    Dallas,

I notice that some are on Ebay and here is a link to some 1" belt sanders. Mine is like the Delta one featured.

They seem a lot dearer then I paid for mine, but I suppose I paid in real dollars.

    Yes it is.
Thanks for all you leads everyone. I thought they were a fairly readily available item but they seem to have gone out of fashion. Maybe the portable finger type units are more popular now and the others have been dropped.
