New SCMS advice
Hi All,
I've done a search through the forums and been unable to find quite what I was looking for. Basically I am in the market for a new SCMS with a max budget of $450.
Current choices seem to be down to 2 makita models, LS1017l and ls1018l and the AEG PS254SB.
At the moment I'm leaning towards the AEG one as its about the only saw outside of the expensive Bosch and Festool that seems to have put some thought into dust collection on the saw while still having the capacity that I'm looking for. Although I can't seem to find any reviews on the saw at all.
Let me know what your thoughts are on these saws and which one you would choose. Also anything to look for would be great.

Look for your budget either will do. They will both need setting up properly to cut accurate to their gauges. I highly recommend buying a good quality blade to go into the saw straight away.
in regard to saws that are twice the price they are usually a lot better, need less fiddling to start with and come with a couple of good blades.
the Makita in your price range is probably the one made in China. I have heard one builder who bought it has given it to his father and bought the twice as expensive Makita. The father is a weekend warrior when it comes to tools and is elated his son gave him a free saw.
My 2bobs worth
p.s. Festool have are ally good setup manual translates to all saws (4 cut accuracy test is a ripper)

The only proviso I have is make sure that the cheaper saws have a steel index quadrant. A lot just have the index points moulded into the ally base and if this is the case you can forget about accurate 90° and 45° etc. without a lot of fiddling. I had a look at the AEG catalogue but I couldn't tell from the pictures.

Having looked at the aeg there are no reference indents, the majors has them but I'll have to check if they are cast or not, I believe they would be cast.
Are indents a worthwhile feature or just not accurate enough

The steel ones are cut very accurately and can be adjusted, therefore, when the saw head is repositioned it will be exactly 90° or whatever. I have a $250 Ryobi and I have to use a digital angle rule to set the cut if I want anything accurate which is a bit of a pain so if you are just using it for rough cutting wood to length at 90° it will be fine but anything else I would go for a better quality saw.

I had a look at the aeg and makita saws today, for the indents the makita is cast into the casing and the aeg is via a steel ring inside the base. Both offer adjustment to set the 90" stops by adjusting the fence over moving the indents.
