Default Sher Power Tools Lathe WLFB-4S

    Hi Everyone,

I have a Sher Power Tools Lathe and, if memory serves me, it was bought new or ex-display about 20 years ago. I suspect that it was sold through Super-Cheap Auto and it is known to have been a flimsy bit of machinery, but I seem to recall it only cost $100 back then because I bought the store display model or it was being cleared out.

The head spindles are threaded onto a shaft. I have a 4-prong spindle for turning between centres and a small face-plate. I was wondering if it is possible to obtain spare or extra parts. I have a view to use a face-plate so I can use it as a sanding disc.

I also plan to replace the 38mm box steel with shorter sections because it is about 150mm too long for my "bench" The base plate is a thin piece of steel rolled over on each side - I'll replace that with a couple more sections of steel since this plate has a tendency to bend upwards when you tighten down the tail-stock. I'll keep the original parts so I can make it longer again in the future.

It looks to be about an M16 thread. I know that good lathes normally have morse taper spindles. Is it possible to get accessories for this? I would like to get some sort of chuck or attachment so I can turn bowls again.

Well, dang thing ain't M16 and it ain't 5/8" either! I might pull it apart and see if I can change the shaft - otherwise I'll just screw on the face plate and turn it into a disc sander.

Starting to think that it might be M16 but with a different thread pitch to what they supply at Bunnings... burgers!

I was thinking of just using the face plate to make a disc sander, but I still like to do occasional turning jobs. I used to mostly turn between centres, but I really would have liked to get back into making wooden bowls. I am starting to wish I had acquired something that had a morse taper socket so I could have made use of those, but I think I only paid $100 for it about 20 years ago.

I think my FIL has one of those. His has the Sher drill and all the lathe parts. The whole thing is housed in a metal wall cabinet.
An M16 thread can be either the standard 2mm pitch or 1.5mm fine which you wouldn't normally find at Bunnings.
I will see if I can get a photo of the unit to see if it is the same as what you have.

Just looked online at disc sanders and they're rediculously priced in my opinion. I may just re-assemble the whole thing, but bolt it down to a bench-top and set it up with a sanding disc on the face-plate and over the bed at the tail end I'll make some sort of timber mount for my cheap GMC 5-speed pillar drill. I don't need 1,000mm between centres anyway - rarely more than 600mm. That way I can just take the drill down for those rare occasions I need more distance between centres. Then it would be just a matter of a solid box to make the table for the sander, which would sit over the bed rails.

It would be nice to figure out that danged thread on the shaft so I could do other things with it. I have started eyeing off other lathes available, and there appears to be a good set-up which can be had with cast steel bed, morse tapers on the head and tail stocks, etc. That'll have to wait until the hobby budget allows for it, or suddenly there is a huge demand for turned decorative bowls from me.

Buy a thread gauge preferably one that incorporates the most thread types
