sherwood 8 inch bench grinder.
I have this bench grinder it is about five years old and done little work. now when turned on the globe blows and the grinder stops. i have taken it to a repair shop they just looked at it and said it would cost too much to repair. has any one else had a similar problem, i cut the wires going to the light and taped them to keep them out of harms way in case there was a problem there as the light was next to useless, as the quick fix did not work any advice would be appreciated. Just a wild guess, but sounds like you have a failed capacitor in there.

If it is the cap you should be able to start the grinder by carefully turning a wheel by hand - preferably with a stick.
Before you replace the cap,, by way of safe diagnostics I would measure the resistance of the windings to earth with a multimeter.
With the grinder UNPLUGGED and the switch on, measure resistance between the ACTIVE AND THE EARTH.
If the switch is a latching (no Volt) switch you have to hold the switch in the on position.
If the resistance is under ~2 MΩ there is a problem, could be damaged winding insulation, if its' close to zero it could be a short on the windings.
If it is OK then test the ACTIVE to NEUTRAL,
If it is close to zero - same problem as above.
If it is a short then these are a PITA to find.
After this you are in SPARKY territory ENTER AT YOUR OWNB RISK.
You could try opening up the motor and looking for a burnt spot on the windings that might be touching something that can be moved out of the way.
Generally this burns through one of the wires and they have to be rejoined - usually a specialists job.
