For the unit at the men's shed we plan on completely removing the shroud.

Default Sherwood Belt / Disk Sander

I've had success with this butcher version of a BMH on my sander.
    It actually works.

From what I can see it looks like you have a row of small holes collecting the dust inside the hood? This will catch most of the visible dust but won't draw enough air be effective on the large amount of invisible dust that these machines generate. Some dust also gets dragged around on a layer of air that travels with the belt and eventually gets sprayed around the workshop. It is impossible to see this fine dust so it is not possible to just tell visually if it works or not.

To drag this fine dust off the belt a wiper (W) is needed to break up air layer - this creates a turbulent mess and so a large air flow is needed to grab this dust which (especially for a 6" wide belts) means using a 6" BMH and 6" ducting etc.

The other issue is hoods obstructing access to either end of the top of the sander which limits the length of work pieces that can be sanded.
To get around this I made the hood mounting arm (A) articulated so the hood can be dropped below the level of the belt.
