    Default Sherwood oscillating spindle sander

My Triton OSS ( 450W Oscillating Spindle Sander | TritonTools.com ) just stopped oscillating and i know it is on the cheap side of bobbin sanders but its one tool that I use regularly but not heavily. The Sherwood model ( https://www.timbecon.com.au/sherwood...spindle-sander ) seems like a small step up in quality but it has the same power and speed and I was hoping to get away with a price under $500. It has the added advantage of being able to be tilted to 45 deg and a big 5 year warranty. That warranty is very appealing. One disadvantage is that it doesn't have a 3" spindle like the Triton does. The Sherwood only goes up to 2" with 5 sizes which is probably enough but I did use the 3" spindle. Timbecon have a few youtube videos but there is little in the way of reviews

    Anyone got one? Opinions?

G'Day Barri, I have a similar machine which gets heaps with my toymaking,
OS-58 - Vertical Oscillating Bench Bobbin Sander from Hare and Forbes.

I've replaced the 2 drive belt in machine twice as they are the part that seems to take all the load.

I bought the first set direct from H&F then knowing the parts bought another 2 sets off ebay heaps cheaper.

You may only need to clean, lubricant and replace the two drive belts, worth a look.

Yes Crowie the H&F one is identical except for colour. I removed the plastic base and couldn't see an easy way to get to the mechanism that oscillates. It seems to be held down by about 8 bolts. When I turn it on the spindle rises and then drops with a loud clunk but continues to spin. Is that what happened to you?
    Got any tips?

PS It is still under warranty (3 years I think) and I will contact the seller (Just Tools - South Melbourne) but they no longer stock it so getting a replacement would be difficult. It will be interesting to see what they offer. I'm not keen on them sending it away and not having one for months. It is no longer mentioned on Triton's Australian website in fact very few stock it now. I would get the H&F one if I needed an exact replacement but was curious about the Sherwood which is similarly priced

I just followed my nose removing the bolts to lift the motor and drive mechanism.
From memory it wasn’t difficult, just went slowly and out it came to reveal the broken belt.
I’d encourage you to have a go if you feel confident about it; if you were closer I’d do it for you.
    Cheers crowie

PS Yes what you’ve described is a broken belt.
I think from memory it’s the 6mm wide belt that’s the problem.
I initially replaced both the 6mm and the 10mm belts with original parts.
On the second repair I used 2off 10mm belts from eBay, still going.

    Does that look right?

    You need 2 of them?

    Yes, looks right.
Originally in my bobbin sander one belt was 6mm wide and the other the 10mm wide.
First up I replaced the broken belt with the exact same belts 6mm & 10mm.
The second time I had issues I replaced both belts with the 10mm wide belts as to my looking there was room on the sprocket to accommodate it.
It’s still running 18mths later after a truck load of toys.

Following on...... I had a good day today but about 230km of driving

I rang them and they asked to bring in the receipt. They told me that Triton have discontinued this model in Australia and therefore it can't be sent anywhere or repaired. The good news is that I will get a full refund once the receipt is received by the original distributor. I didn't even need to bring in the faulty unit. After going to Just Tools I drove to Timbecon to have a look at the Sherwood OSS, I was so impressed compared to the Triton/Scheppach model I bought it. Similar specs. but twice the weight and the spindles are taller at 140mm so I can't use the spare spindles I bought with the Triton. It also has 5 spindles up to 2" but as mentioned above doesn't have a 3" one which I often used with the Triton. It feels a lot more more solid and has a better cast iron surface and above all an excellent 5 year warranty.
After Crowie's advise I ordered 2 belts and will attempt to repair the Triton I might keep it or end up selling it if successful, so I won't be out of pocket and end up with a better unit.

For anyone who's interested I was curious to find out who else makes this sander as nearly all these types of machines have other identical models/brands with the only difference being colour. The Scheppach OSS, for example, has about 10 identical brands including Trtiton, Grizzly, Rigid, Wen, etc etc but I couldn't find one for the Sherwood until I stumbled onto this ...... Amazon.com. So the only other brand that makes this is Wen. I was pleasantly surprised that it got 4.5 stars over 1000 ratings

Good to see Sherwood have decided to update their colour scheme. The black with an accent of orange is certainly better looking than the horrid solid orange.
