    Hi Mark,
Just been making my weekly check back through past posts and found you pics.

Pic 1, the intermediate pulley is definitely inclined back toward the motor and the intermediate to motor belt is definitely lower at the motor end, suggesting misallignment.

Not totally sure if your latest tweaks to the system have overcome both these problems or not. If they haven't, some reworking in the area of the intermediate pulley system will be required.

Found the thread about the capacitor before finding this one, the info given is correct, the voltage is divided between the cap and the winding, so 125VAC (as per original) should be OK, as should 250VAC if it would physically fit.

Will keep you on watch in case you have further issues.

Malb, thanks for keeping an eye on me, I need it with some things, although I will usually pull something apart until I come to what looks like a broken or damaged bit, then go from there.

In this instance I've never had the pleasure of fiddling with a dual belt drive system on a drill press, nor with a capacitor.

I am going ahead with the 125Vac capacitor purchase, in a week or so, there should be an answer.

With regard to the pulley alignment, once I was able to take the drive pulley off the motor to clean up and re-fit, the alignment is now pretty good.

I do believe that the reason it may have been left in that position, was because there was a second very small grub screw still holding the pulley under the top grub screw. Many thanks to Avery for that obviously hard learnt tip.

One of the pleasant surprises was taking off the cumbersome timber table with an extremely small fence sitting atop of the drill press to reveal a virtually pristine original table.

    Mick,
your drill is similar to mine. Mine also has two different sized belts. 25A and 26A from memory. They will go on either way, but there's a right way and a wrong way. The right way makes moving the belts for speed changing much easier!

Chris, I picked up some new belts today, one is 590mm and the other is 540mm according to the SKF belt measuring unit at my local SKF bearing place.

At first I didn't realise the belts were different lengths, but a stretch on the bench and it was obvious. A quick measure and allowance of 5mm for stretching and wear and the correct replacements were acquired.

Starting to look good, just need the new starting capacitor then it'll be pretty flash.

Many many thanks for all of the advice, wonderful place this.

    Mick.

    Hello Mick,

I had a very similar problem with my drill press not starting on its own but then I could turn it by hand and it would start. I had it this way for over a year. I took the capacitor cover off and found that one of my wires had come loose from the capacitor. Soldered it back on and it works like new. I see you already bought belts but I was going to suggest these, but you have already spent your money.

You can order them in any length and they are adjustable. They are also suppose to dampen vibration very well.

Bret, thank you for the link, interesting belts. I have seen one similar to these some time ago on something somewhere.

Yep, already purchased a pair of belts, total cost of $17.10 for both. Small one $6.90, large one $10.20.

I've already ordered another capacitor, should be here next month, $9.25 delivered to my door from Taiwan.

Thought an update would be in order, the new capacitor arrived from Hong Kong, interestingly, the description of the goods in the custom declaration is, "Cell Phone Accessories (China)".

Apart from the fact that the capacitor is probably a bit bigger than many current mobile phones, it works very well.

I now have a pedestal drill, for approximately 30.70% of the current new price of what appears to be a today version of this drill from the same company (Carbatech).

    It should see me out.

Many thanks for all of the advice.

    Mick.
